Redheads, The Best Hair Removal Method You Aren’t Using

Most redheads have very sensitive skin, which makes hair removal incredibly tricky. Should you opt for a razor? Will wax irritate your skin? Are there better options? We consulted with Lyn Tacket from Genesis Studio Spa in Iowa. She shared for love for sugaring saying, “My clients love it! Only the hair is removed, not the skin. Far less redness, much less painful, and more hair is removed.”

What is Sugaring?

Sugaring, also known as ‘sugar waxing’ or ‘Persian waxing’ is a method of hair removal that has been in use since 1900 BC. During the process, a sugaring substrate made with lemon juice and sugar sticks to and removes hair without attaching to the skin. Many compare this to standard waxing, but sugaring can be applied over missed hairs. The paste (which is at room temperature) is also very gentle and can be put right over an area that was just sugared without fear of much irritation. The hair is then pulled in the natural direction of your follicle’s growth pattern.

Cons of Shaving

“The problem with shaving is, it creates a ‘stump’, like a tree when cut, so the hair that grows out will be thicker because it is not new hair, just a hair that’s had the top chopped off. True, it may be convenient to simply grab a razor in the shower and go at it,” says Tacket. “But it is hard on the skin. Most of the time, shaving also scrapes the surface of the skin, causing it to be irritated and not smooth.”

Cons of Waxing

“Waxing causes irritation for most people. I have many clients come to me with stories of how they’ve had breakouts, pimples, rashes, and other skin irritation. If you insist on waxing, make sure the esthetician or cosmetologist knows which wax to use. Various hair and skin types call for certain formulations. The wrong one will produce inferior results, irritated skin, and not necessarily remove all the hair,” Tacket recommends.

If you insist on waxing, make sure your esthetician uses a sensitive cream based wax with healing botanicals such as chamomile and green tea.

Pros of Sugaring

Because of the many issues with shaving and waxing, this is why Tacket recommends sugaring. She said, “Remember, body sugaring must be done by a certified practitioner. In fact, sugaring can lead to permanent hair loss. I’m already seeing clients who are experiencing areas on their body where the hair is no longer growing back.” Overall, sugaring is better for those with sensitive skin. It’s all-natural and the paste attaches more to the hair and not the actual skin. It is less painful and less irritating.
