Halloween Hairstyle How-To: Dorothy from “The Wizard of Oz”

Get the classic look in 5 easy steps

October is in full swing and that can only mean one thing: Halloween is approaching. Finding a redhead Halloween costume doesn’t have to be expensive or stressful. If you’re a last-minute person, or simply struggling to find a costumer this year, there is one option that never fails: Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz. It is a classic look and your outfit can be put together very easily.

First, find a light blue dress and fun, sparkly red heels.

Now, let’s talk about the hair. Here’s a step-by-step tutorial on how to get Dorothy’s hairstyle:

1. Using your finger or rat tail comb, begin dividing your red hair into two sections down the middle. Spray hair with a generous amount of hairspray, like Paul Mitchell Worked Up Working Spray to create re-workable texture in the hair.

2. Take the first section and begin to twist hair along the front down to the top of your ear. Once you have the twist in place, begin to braid until about halfway down the pigtail. Secure with a redhead hair tie and tie a small light blue ribbon into a bow around the elastic for Dorothy’s look.

3. Repeat on opposite side.

4. Take a curling iron (a great choice is Hot Tools Pink Titanium Curling Iron) and begin to curl the ends of each pigtail. This will create a full look on each side.

5. Finish with hairspray to lock in the look.

Want to make the look more fun? Turn the pigtails into mini fishtail braids! Watch the tutorial below:
