Emulsification is the act of heating up and distributing your hair product on your hands before applying on your hair.
When you have curly or wavy red hair, you have to take extra steps to perfect your hair care routine. One step lots of people miss when mastering their curly hair routine is how to emulsify their hair care products. Emulsifying hair products simply means rubbing products between your hands to thoroughly blend the product and activate the ingredients. Then, apply it to the hair in a form of a “cocktail”.
Let’s dig a little deep into the world of emulsification so your red hair and curls look their best:
1. Apply products to wet hair
Many do not know that hair products, especially those marketed towards curly hair, need moisture to activate. This means they need water from your hair or from the shower. This is why so many curly products are applied to very wet hair. When emulsifying a product in your hands first, you should wet your hands and then add the product. Rub it together for about 10-15 seconds until it feels blended with the water.
2. Check labels
The best way to know if you need to emulsify a product is to check the label. Most products will tell you right on the bottle, but sometimes they don’t.
3. Products that need emulsifying:
- Shampoo
- Curl cream
- Conditioner
- Leave-in conditioner
Some products will tell you on the packaging if it needs emulsifying. Check the following products to see if you should do this:
- Oils
- Gels
- Mousses — as a rule of thumb, it’s not necessary. However, spreading these products out in your hands may help to avoid overusing them in a certain area.
