Disney Pixar’s Turning Red has been a huge hit ever since it came out in March 2022. The film follows a young teenage girl, Mei, as she discovers a part of herself and her family she had no idea existed. When Mei experiences strong feelings or emotions, she turns into a giant red panda. Mei soon comes to learn this is something that happens to all the women in her family. Through a series of teenage shenanigans, Mei comes to understand herself and her gift.
Now you might be wondering what this has to do with redheads besides the aptly named title, Turning Red. At the start of the movie, Mei has brown hair but once she turns into a panda, her fur turns red permanently. Mei tries to hide her red hair but (as most redheads can relate to) she soon realizes it’s part of her and she should be proud of it.
Turning Red isn’t really about redheads but the feeling of not fitting in and even wishing away red hair away is something we can relate to. We’re happy to see Mei embrace her new look by the end of the film, and hope this movie can inspire young redheads to embrace their unique look.
