Why All Redheads Should Wear Sunscreen When Flying

UV radiation can be the same as a 20-minute tanning bed session. Oh my!

Redheads need have to protect their fair skin 365 days a year. But, how many of you actually apply sunscreen BEFORE getting on an airplane? Yes, we’re serious. We’re talking about applying it while you travel to your (tropical island) final destination.

It’s a fact: you can get sunburnt on an airplane.

There are two types of harmful ultraviolet radiations, UVA and UVB. UVB rays cause those awful sunburns we all have experienced at one time. The rays are strongest between 10am and 4pm. UVA rays remain stable throughout the year and can penetrate through glass –– the main reason why it’s important to wear sunscreen while sitting in the window seat on the plane or even while driving.

Also, a fascinating study from JAMA Dermatology found that just one hour at 30,000 feet could expose pilots to the same amount of UV radiation as a 20-minute tanning bed session would.

Shocking!

So, the next time you travel on a plane, do not forget to carry sunscreen in your carry-on bag. And, make sure your loved ones apply it too. Hey, if they don’t want to apply it — do it for them! We all know redheads are not shy.
