Developing vegan and cruelty-free products was a top priority when we established the How to be a Redhead beauty line. We aimed to align our products with our core values while ensuring they were safe for redheads. To affirm our commitment to quality and ethics, our Leaping Bunny-approved products assure redheads of their trustworthiness. You may have seen this certification on our website or other brands, but what does it mean?

What is the Leaping Bunny program?

Eight animal protection groups formed the Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics (CCIC) to prevent misleading claims of cruelty-free products. The Leaping Bunny Program states that CCIC is “a single comprehensive standard and an internationally recognized Leaping Bunny Logo.” This coalition collaborates with companies to enhance the visibility of cruelty-free products and provides consumers with confidence in the brands they choose, all by this established standard.

In addition to promoting transparency, the CCIC actively educates consumers about the importance of choosing cruelty-free products. Through outreach campaigns and informative resources, they empower shoppers to make informed decisions and support brands that align with their values. This initiative benefits animals and encourages companies to adopt ethical practices, ultimately fostering a marketplace where compassion and responsibility are prioritized. The CCIC plays a crucial role in the movement toward more humane consumer choices by raising awareness and advocating for better standards.

What is the Leaping Bunny standard?

To be Leaping Bunny-Approved, a cosmetic or household product company cannot test on animals or purchase ingredients from manufacturers that test on animals. The full Leaping Bunny certification guidelines can be found at LeapingBunny.org. All brands currently Leaping Bunny-Approved, including How to be a Redhead, can be found in the Leaping Bunny Compassionate Shopping Guide.

Why is cruelty-free and no animal testing important?

Animal testing was historically used to assess the safety of products for human use. Numerous alternatives are available today, including utilizing ingredients that have already been deemed safe. Companies that opt not to conduct animal testing employ different methodologies that are equally reliable. However, there is no longer any justification for harming or sacrificing animals in this process. While we cannot influence the practices of other companies, our commitment is to ensure that our products prioritize ethical considerations and contribute positively to the well-being of all.

Here are some reasons why cruelty-free and no animal testing are essential:

  1. Animal Welfare: Cruelty-free practices prevent the suffering and death of animals in testing laboratories, promoting a more humane approach to product development.
  2. Ethical Consumerism: Many consumers prefer to support brands that align with their values, making cruelty-free products a significant factor in ethical shopping.
  3. Innovation in Testing Methods: The push for cruelty-free alternatives encourages the development of advanced, non-animal testing methods, such as in vitro testing and computer modeling, which can be more efficient and relevant.
  4. Health and Safety: Some argue that animal testing may not accurately predict human reactions, leading to safer and more effective products when using non-animal methods.
  5. Environmental Impact: Reducing animal testing often correlates with a commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly practices, as cruelty-free companies may be more likely to prioritize overall environmental responsibility.
  6. Consumer Awareness: The growing demand for cruelty-free products raises awareness about animal rights and encourages discussions around ethical practices in the cosmetics and personal care industries.
  7. Legal and Regulatory Changes: Advocating for cruelty-free practices can lead to stronger regulations and policies that protect animals and promote humane standards across industries.
  8. Positive Brand Image: Companies adopting cruelty-free policies often enjoy a better reputation and customer loyalty as consumers increasingly prioritize ethical considerations in purchasing.
  9. Global Standards: Establishing cruelty-free certifications can lead to universal standards recognized and trusted by consumers worldwide.
  10. Cultural Shift: Emphasizing cruelty-free practices fosters a broader cultural shift toward compassion and respect for all living beings, influencing future generations to prioritize the ethical treatment of animals.
