The 5 Different Foundation Finishes and The Best Choices for Redheads

Find Your Perfect Finish

Picking the perfect shade of foundation can be tough enough for redheads, but what about selecting the right finish? The right finish can leave redhead skin looking smooth, shine-free, and airbrushed. There are 5 main finish types you will see, but all of them are meant for different skin and different styles.

Sheer

When you want something lightweight and light coverage, you opt for sheer. Do not expect sheer to give you a full-face glam look because that’s not its purpose. Sheer foundation is perfect for “no makeup” days when you want a little coverage or color correction but still, want your natural skin texture to show through. Sheer finish can also be good for aging skin, as heavier foundations tend to sink into fine lines.

Dewy

If you like a really soft, dewy look then opt for a dewy foundation. It will have a more “wet” finish so if you’re oily you might want to skip this one. Dewy foundation is great for making dry skin look fresh and rejuvenated. Depending on the brand, dewy foundation can be buildable, but more often than not it’s a light to medium coverage.

Radiant/Illuminating

These foundations are also sometimes considered dewy but many will be labeled as radiant or illuminating and typically have some actual shine to them. This is another foundation finish to skip if your skin is oily. These are great for dry skin and are usually light to medium coverage.

Natural/Satin

Maybe the most universal of finishes is natural or satin. It will give you a soft dewy look while still providing coverage. This finish is one of the best ways to get a natural look with a full face of makeup. Many of your favorite foundations are probably a natural or satin finish if they aren’t labeled otherwise.

Matte

If you’ve got oily skin or need really full coverage, you probably want a matte foundation. If your skin is dry, stay away from matte. It will just make you look more dry and cakey. Matte foundations are usually medium to full coverage and are a great option for a longwear look.
