Podcast Episode 3: Redhead Skin with Guest Dr. Leslie Baumann

She's a world renowned dermatologist, author, researcher and natural redhead!

Dr. Leslie Baumann is a world renowned dermatologist, author, researcher and natural redhead! She is the CEO of the Baumann Cosmetic and Research Institute based in Miami, Florida and the author of The New York Times bestseller, The Skin Type Solution.

Adrienne and Stephanie first met Dr. Leslie Baumann at a skin event in New York City almost a decade ago! You may have seen Baumann’s tips on HowtobeaRedhead.com since the launch in 2011.

Both Adrienne and Stephanie open the podcast discussing their skin and troubles they have had. They call Dr. Baumann to dig more into redhead skin and what redheads should be doing to ensure youthful, healthy looking skin.

Here are her favorite ‘Redhead Friendly’ approved product recommendations (warning: they are all amazing):

  1. Favorite cleanser: NIA24 Gentle Cream Cleanser
  2. Favorite moisturizers: Dr. Baumann is prone to eczema (like most redheads) and loves Zerafite Soothing and Calming Moisturizer (contains argan oil).
  3. Tinted sunscreens: A great option for redheads who want SPF coverage but want a little glow to the skin. Approved tinted sunscreens: Obagi Sun Shield SPF 50, Elta MD Tinted Sunscreen SPF 41PCA Skin Sheer Tint Broad Spectrum SPF 45. Dr. Baumann prefers physical sunscreens instead of heavy sunscreens because the chemicals in heavy sunscreens can really hurt the skin.
  1. Retinol: Dr. Baumann calls retinol, “The most important step for your skin.” If you’re just getting started with a retinol, start with the lowest strength and make sure the product is not in a jar. It needs to be in an airless pump. Approved retinol recommendations: Skinceuticals RetinolSkinMedica RetinolESSOPI RetinolReplenix Retinol

When you’re first using retinol, cleanse the skin, apply an eye cream, apply moisturizer THEN apply retinol. As your skin gets use to the intensity of retinol, you will switch your routine and apply retinol BEFORE moisturizer.

  1. Body Lotions: Favorite is Zerafite Body Cream

Dr. Baumann is now using Tazorac Gel which is the highest of intensities. Only recommended for those who have used normal retinol for years and need a step up.

  1. Vitamin Recommendations: Heliocare vitamin: People use it to keep ferns safe from the sun and it can be used to keep a human’s skin safe from the sun too. Viviscal vitamin: Great vitamin for those who want thicker hair and skin. Vitamin C is essential for good skin. Dr. Baumann recommends a diet rich in salmon, cod, fruits and vegetables. These foods are also great for anti-inflammatory. Probiotics: Dermatologists are still studying probiotics and their effect on skin, but they do know the gut (stomach) is controlling the skin.
  1. Sunscreen/sun care tips: A hat is a must and ½ a teaspoon of sunscreen for the face and it needs to feel thick – this is how you know your face has enough sunscreen.
  1. UPF Clothing is wonderful. Recommended brands: Coolibar + Mott50. Look for UPF Clothing with holes under the arms to keep you cool and skin protected at the same time.
  2. Hair removal: Threading is recommended.
  3. Favorite beauty treatment: Dr. Baumann loves to get the VBeam Laser treatment done 1-2 times a year. It evens out the skin and helps with her redness.
