2015’s Best Color Depositing Shampoos for Redheads

The natural way to enhance your locks

Updated: October 25th, 2023

Natural and ‘by choice’ redheads have a similar hair question, “My hair is fading. How can I make it naturally vibrant?” There are some temporary natural remedies, but color-depositing shampoos always hit the ball out of the park.

Color-depositing shampoos naturally deposit color in the hair as you wash your copper locks. If you’re a natural redhead, add this to your beauty routine a few times a week, and if you’re a redhead ‘by choice’, use this regularly to lengthen time in-between your trips to the salon.

'Redhead Friendly' Beauty Products

In the recent years, more shampoo companies have begun targeting redheads — and we’re so thankful! We’ve tested and approved several color-depositing ‘Redhead Friendly’ shampoos. You won’t have to worry about your scalp being dyed red (yes, unfortunately, it can happen with some shampoos) and your hair will look vibrant in a subtle, natural way.

Get ready for people to stop you and say, “Your hair looks so red today!”

1. Quantum Riveting Reds Color Replenishing Shampoo gently cleanses and moisturizes with vitamin C, wheat protein and red henna extract. The shampoo is infused with sunflower seed extract to deposit color refreshing elements and to protect hair color from fading. Reds will appear brighter and more luminous. Recommended for use on any red shade ranging from copper, strawberry blonde to mahogany.

2. If you were a fan of ARTec Loreal Professionnel Color Depositing Shampoo, you must have been sad (just like us) when it was discontinued. An excellent and very comparable line to Artec is the new Pure Blends Color Depositing Shampoos. Just like Artec, they have 3 different shades of red: Red, Cherry, Chestnut. The shampoo maintains the brightness of red hair.

3. How to be a Redhead recommended Davines Alchemic Shampoo in ‘Red’ in its New York Times feature, and for a good reason. This product, made in Italy, is a true luxury and makes red hair pop with 1-2 shampoos.

4. As many of you know, we’re big fans of Pureology’s Reviving Red product line because it was made for redheads! Its line consists of shampoo, conditioner and a color depositing serum.

5. Not too sure if color depositing shampoo is right for you? Try a shampoo like Nexxus Color Assure Rebalancing Shampoo. It gently cleanses and nourishes hair with a creamy rich lather, helping to protect color vibrancy.Nexxus Color Assure Rebalancing ShampooNexxus Color Assure Rebalancing Shampoo

How Redheads Should Deal with a Scalp Sunburn

    Updated: May 3, 2019

Does this story sound familiar? You slathered on sunscreen all day only to find out hours later you got a scalp sunburn (ouch!). Most of us redheads can relate. Your scalp is important to protect, because, hey, it’s skin too. Plus, every redhead wants their red hair looking fabulous all summer long. Don’t worry, you can keep your scalp free-and-clear of sunburns without getting your red hair greasy and oily due to sunscreen. Though it’s a little harder to deal with sunburns on your scalp, we spoke with a few skin (and hair) experts to provide you with this guide.

    Prevention

    1. Dr. Kent, a board-certified dermatologist and fellowship-trained Dermatologic Surgeon at Miami Dermatology, says, “Redheads always need to wear SPF which prevents UVA and UVB rays, and avoid the sun during the prime hours of 10:00 am and 3:00 pm.”

    2. Wearing hats & hair scarves are important, but we recommend going a step further. Wear hats and fabrics with SPF protection IN the fabric. Some of the UPF fabrics have SPF +100 so they’re very effective in blocking the sun.

    Non-Greasy Hair Sunscreen

    1. Aveda’s Sun Care Protective Hair Veil is a great ‘redhead friendly’ option if you’re looking for a water-resistant UV defense mist to carry in your beach bag or purse all summer long.

    2. “There are companies that make specific products for the scalp that are not greasy. Clarins Sunscreen Care Oil Spray SPF 30 for Skin & Hair is a dry oil so it doesn’t make your hair greasy. And, Shiseido’s Refreshing Sun Protection Spray for Body & Hair Broad Spectrum SPF 16 is another great option,” explained Dr. Jaliman, a board-certified dermatologist.

    3. Bare Republic has a great eco-friendly organic UV hair care line. We love their Eco-Active Hair Care UV Protecting Detangler. It’s a 5-in-1 mist providing UV protection, instant hair-detangling, frizz control, lasting shine and condition to your red locks.

    4. Looking for an affordable sunscreen scalp spray that won’t break the bank? Turn to Banana Boat’s Sport Quik Dri Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Scalp Spray. It’s lightweight and hypoallergenic.

How To Apply Sunscreen To The Scalp:

Beginning on one side of your head, part your red hair from the front of the hairline to the back of the neck. Spray or rub in the sunscreen directly to the scalp. Continue to the next part until you’re on the other side of your head. Fill in any spots you missed. It might be best to wrap your hair into a ballerina bun or use a Redhead Hair Tie or Bobby Pin to create a glamorous look.

    Post Burn

So, you’ve already burned. What to do?

    1. Dr. Jaliman tells her clients to use a topical aloe vera gel, but make sure that it’s fragrance-free. Or else you can use an over the counter topical hydrocortisone cream to get rid of the redness and inflammation.

    2. Daniel Gravel from Daniel Gravel Salon in Beverly Hills has a non-traditional method of healing a burning scalp. “This might sound a little weird, but it works! Apply dijon mustard to the burn and keep it on until you feel the scalp beginning to cool. Then, shampoo with moisture shampoo. After your shower, treat the scalp with coconut oil and sleep overnight. Rinse and repeat if needed.”

    3. “Once the scalp is already burnt, use a cool compress, gentle skin care products and stay extra hydrated,” recommends Dr. Kent.

    4. If you’re experiencing an itchy, flaky scalp, try using a product like Living Proof’s Dry Scalp Treatment. It delivers instant soothing and sustained hydration to the scalp. After cleansing, simply apply the product to your scalp. Do not rinse it out.

How To Use Beet Juice To Make Red Hair Vibrant

Beets provide the body with antioxidant benefits, but this vegetable also contains natural food pigments that make a good hair dye. If you’ve ever eaten a beat, you will notice how heavily it can stain.

A great DIY trick for ‘uping’ your natural color is to use red juices. Cranberry and beet juice are both great options.

READ: 4 Ways To Boost Your Red Hair and Stop Fading

When you extract the juice from this root vegetable, you can add it to your shampoo for a temporary hair coloring. Depending on your natural hair color, beet juice can give your hair a reddish (or purple) hue. You can darken the color by regularly washing your hair with a beet juice and shampoo mixture.

Since you are using the beet juice as a shampoo additive instead of as a dye treatment or rinse, the tint only lasts from shampoo to shampoo. This is why using beet juice could be an excellent way for natural redheads to enhance their hair since most are looking for a simple boost.

READ: 3 All Natural Ways To Dye Your Hair Red

Try warming up the juice and saturating your red hair with it. Then, throw a plastic bag over your hair and let it do its thing for a few hours. When ready, rinse and condition. Make sure to do a strip test (in the back near your neck) first to ensure the color works for your hair!

High-SPF Sunscreens: Why They’re Not Better

This might come as a shock to you!

      Updated: November 22, 2020

When you’ve shopped for sunscreen, you have probably noticed products with very high sun protection factor (SPF) ratings.

As a redhead, do you assume 100 SPF will protect your fair skin better than 30 SPF? This is not true and three dermatologists are here to break this common misconception.

      What Is SPF?

SPF refers to the ability of a sunscreen to block ultraviolet B (UVB) rays, which cause sunburns, but not UVA rays, which are more closely linked to deeper skin damage. Both UVA and UVB contribute to the risk of skin cancer.

The SPF rating is a measure of the time it would take you to sunburn if you were not wearing sunscreen as opposed to the time it would take with sunscreen on. Florida dermatologist James M. Spencer, MD told WebMD, “SPF is not a consumer-friendly number. It is logical for someone to think that an SPF of 30 is twice as good as an SPF of 15 and so on. But that is not how it works.”

Why the American Academy of Dermatology considers SPF 30 the gold standard for sunscreen

H2BAR had the opportunity to speak with three dermatologists who explain why redheads can use SPF 30 and only SPF 30.

Debra Jaliman M.D., a board-certified dermatologist and author of the book Skin Rules says, “An SPF 30 offers sunscreen protection for UVB light of 97%. An SPF 50 offers sunscreen protection of 98% for UVB light. An SPF 100 offers 99% percent protection for UVB light. You notice the differences in percentage are not that great yet the numbers for SPF are very great.”

Dr. Jaliman also points out that the SPF count tells a consumer nothing about UVA light which also causes skin cancer and causes sun damage to the skin.

READ: The Best ‘Redhead Friendly’ Sunscreens via Consumer Reports (2018)

She also points out an interesting fact that many people who use SPF 70 hardly ever re-apply.

“There was a study of people who used SPF 70 sunscreen and use 1/2 as much sunscreen. What they found was this was an equivalent to not an SPF of 35 but actually the square root of 70 which is an SPF of 8.4,” says Dr. Jaliman. “The American Academy of Dermatology considers the gold standard for sunscreen to be an SPF 30.”

Dr. Jaliman also points out that another problem with using high SPF values is many people will not reapply their sunscreen, and higher SPF means more chemicals. “The recommendations are that you reapply sunscreen every two hours. The other problem is many choose, for example, SPF 70 and it may not block both UVA and UVB rays, and the sunscreen is loaded with chemicals to produce a high SPF factor.”

READ: The Best Sunscreen Sticks for Redheads

Why the FDA will get rid of high SPF numbers

“High SPF’s offer only minimal advantages over SPF 30,” says Dr. Alan J. Parks founder of Eastside Dermatology & Skin Care Center. “The FDA will actually be doing away with higher number designation in the near future. The best protection is with a physical blocker such as zinc oxide.”

Why SPF 30+ to 50+ has practically no change in formula

Dr. De Fiori, a leading dermatologist for the Rosacea Treatment Clinic says, “The maximum SPF number a product can state has varied over time. I noticed that when many manufacturers increased their product ratings from 30+ to 50+ there was no change in the formulas because the concentration and types of sunscreens being used remained the same.”

The lesson here is to use SPF which protects again both UVA and UVB rays, and using SPF 30 is doctor recommended, but make sure to reapply every 1-2 hours to keep your fair skin protected.
