Redheads: 17 Things To Expect at the H2BAR Austin Event

The Rock it like a Redhead Tour, presented by How to be a Redhead (H2BAR), is premiering in Austin in 22 days! We then take off to Nashville, Seattle, Chicago and New York City (for complete tour dates click here), but we’ve received many questions asking what the event is all about, what to wear and what to expect. Thanks to the incredible sketch from Yarden Karako, we were able to bring the event to life before many of you experience it first hand.

It is all happening on April 30, 2015 at the Palm Door on Sabine from 6-9:30PM.

So, pretend like you’re dressed up and ready to walk into the venue. Ready, set, go…

1. Upon entering the event, you will walk the red carpet and take a glamorous photo.

Many photographers will be on scene to capture the excitement and expressions of attendees. If you’re wondering what to wear, we encourage our audience to dress in what makes them feel comfortable; but it is a ‘dress to impress’ evening! Have fun with it and let your outfit express your personality.

2. You will then be directed to the sponsored ‘redhead friendly’ beauty and fashion bars.

Which to choose first?!

3. In the meantime, there will be complimentary catering from The Ginger Armadillo.

The founder is a redhead who started her own BBQ truck. She is creating a special menu for all attendees. Enjoy every bite!

4. Enjoy makeup touch ups and advice from the experts.

We’re overjoyed to have Rae Cosmetics, a local Austin makeup company as the sponsor.

5. Skin consultations will be available from Austin’s best.

Redheads have so many questions about their skin and the best skin routine for a particular skin type. Experts from Olive + M, a local Austin skin brand, will be demonstating proper skin techniques and more.

6. Kenra Professional, the official hair sponsor for Austin, will be giving complimentary blow outs, hair touchups and consultations.

Want a fancy braid? Or have questions about your hair type? Ask away.

7. Adrienne and Stephanie will be working closely with Billion Dollar Brows for the eyebrow bar.

All we can tell you is, there is something very special happening. We will be announcing it soon.

8. The How to be a Redhead Beauty Bar will feature new apparel and brand new never-before-seen products!

Get excited!

9. Turn to Austin’s nail queens to get mini-manicures, polish touchups.. and more.

Plum Natural Nail Spa will have experts in a row to pamper you and give you the best nail advice.

10. Have fashion questions? One of Austin’s top stylists, Edith Henry, will be giving redheads her top fashion tips.

Oh, did we mention she is a redhead too?!

11. Enjoy entertainment from the Irish Dance Center.

12. Complimentary cocktails and soft drinks will be provided.

Thanks to Big Red, Fever Tree, DRY Soda, Thirsty Planet and Dripping Springs.

13. The three fashion shows will begin!

Looks from Kohl’s, Coolibar and Blue Lux (a local Austin brand) will be showcased.

14. Special performance by redhead rockstar, Shayne Leighton.

We’re excited to have Shayne Leighton tour with us from city to city. Don’t miss her debut performance in Austin.

15. Leave with $300+ in beauty products.

Adrienne, Stephanie and the How to be a Redhead team have tested and deemed every single product in the swag bag as ‘redhead friendly’ approved.

5 Ways Redheads Should Protect Their Skin At the Beach

The bright sun brings us happiness and light, but the UV rays it emits can be harsh and damaging to a redhead’s skin. I for one don’t mind going the extra mile to protect my redhead skin so that it stays healthy and because sunburnt skin has never flattered me much.

Here are 5 ways to protect yourself this summer at the beach:

1. Sunblock

This is something that you have probably been reminded to do since you could walk, but it bears repeating. In my 21 years as a fair skinned redhead, I have learned just how important this is. I’ve found that putting some quality ‘redhead friendly’ UV protecting sunblock on right when you get to the beach and after any swimming/physical activity is the best way to go. Although I found it annoying as a kid to keep slathering myself with lotion when I just wanted to play, I am always grateful when I wake up the next day and I’m not in a lot of pain and red as a lobster.

2. Cover-Up

I usually bring two different cover-ups to the beach with me. I pack a loose, lightweight, light-colored t-shirt for when I plan on playing Frisbee with friends or going for a run. I also pack a cute sundress, one that covers my back (the forgotten and hard to reach place). It’s nice to have something to throw on when you’re lying on the blanket reading a magazine and something for when you plan on being active. And, you have the option of choosing UV Protective Clothing to keep you extra protected.

3. Big Umbrella

Last summer, a few of my girlfriends and I went to Newport, RI for a weekend getaway. One of them brought a large umbrella and let me tell you, it was the best idea! If you’ve covered up and reapplied sunblock and you just want to lie down without being bothered, hanging out under the cool shade of an umbrella is a great, protective way to go.

4. Hat

I like to run around on the beach and play different sports all day, so I usually bring a baseball hat with me. An alternative to that (and one that covers the back of the neck) is a floppy-brimmed sun hat. The nice thing about bringing a hat is that it protects both the sensitive skin on your face and scalp, and gives your eyes a break from squinting.

5. Sunglasses

Squinting brings me to my next tip: sunglasses! I recently invested in prescription sunglasses because I like to protect my baby blues as often as possible in the summer, but I also like to be able to see. I usually go for a pair with a fairly large lens, so that the sensitive skin around my eyes is protected from the sun, too.

Official Charity Announcement for the 2015 Rock it like a Redhead Tour

The Rock it like a Redhead Beauty Tour is set to premiere in less than 30 days and we’re excited (and honored) to announce the official charity for the 5-series of events spanning from the Southwest, Midwest, East and West Coast. How to be a Redhead‘s goal was to team up with an organization who’s message was about empowerment and confidence, but most of all, we wanted the contribution to make a big difference in the lives of women.

That charity is: The Hope Bag Mission.

Founder of Me and the Girls Skincare line, Sharon Hackney-Robinson, has been a critical care nurse in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for over thirty years. Her journey with The Hope Bag Mission started with a woman named Sarah. “I hope I made a difference because Sarah changed my life forever that night,” says Hackney-Robinson.

In her years as a health care professional, Hackney-Robinson has seen many women in need living in impoverished neighborhoods and squalor. But she had never seen a woman so completely broken until she met Sarah; she was HIV positive and the bloody needle used on her newborn baby had pierced through Hackney-Robinson’s hand.

When the incident occurred, Hackney-Robinson had a village of support. When she went to visit Sarah before leaving the building that night, she sat alone in the dark, terrified. Hackney-Robinson sat down next to her and she spoke in a defeated, soft tone: “Not a single person in the whole world loves me. Nobody. I deserve to die. I want to die.”

RELATED: Big Announcement, The 2015 Rock it like a Redhead Beauty Tour

“A river of tears was the only evidence that I was in the room with another human being,” says Hackney-Robinson. “I held her hand and she slowly responded, gripping tightly as though she was hanging on for dear life. I gave her tissues to dry her face and a comb and brush to fix her hair. I continued to pillage through my personal things to help her to clean up. She was indeed a mess. When I left her that night, the saddest, most broken woman I had ever met was smiling. My new lip gloss was shining on her lips. My favorite handbag and all of its contents were clutched tightly to her chest.”

Sarah and other women like her are the inspiration behind the Hope Bags; simple personal care and beauty items that made her feel feel worthy and human again.

The Hope Bags are distributed through organizations that provide long-term housing and recovery to women and girls that are victims of human trafficking. Each young woman or girl finds a lovely bag on her bed filled with personal care items.
The Hope Bags are distributed through organizations that provide long-term housing and recovery to women and girls that are victims of human trafficking. Each young woman or girl finds a lovely bag on her bed filled with personal care items.

Hackney-Robinson believes personal care items are an intricate part of healing a broken life during a very difficult transition. The Hope Bags extend opportunity and love from one woman to another by restoring dignity and trust.

The Hope Bag Mission aims to distribute to non-profit organizations that house and recover victims who are rescued from human trafficking throughout the country. “We strive to make our most vulnerable women and girls feel safe, valuable and beautiful during their difficult transition,” says Hackney-Robinson. “I want ‘my ladies’ to know that there is someone in the world that loves them. That person is me.”

Hackney-Robinson founded the Me and the Girls Skincare in 2011 and each purchase from the line buys a Hope Bag that is filled by generous volunteers. The bags are then distributed through organizations that provide long-term housing and recovery to women and girls that are victims of human trafficking. Each young woman or girl finds a lovely bag on her bed filled with personal care items, a book of inspiration and a handwritten note of encouragement from the woman (or man) who volunteered to fill her personal bag.

How to be a Redhead is proud to give 10% of all Rock it like a Redhead ticket proceeds to The Hope Bag Mission.

“Just like How to be a Redhead, The Hope Bag Mission uses beauty to lift women up,” says Stephanie Vendetti, co-founder of How to be a Redhead. “Our team will be delivering Hope Bags to shelters in each city: Austin, Nashville, Seattle, Chicago and New York City.”

If you haven’t claimed your spot in Austin, Nashville or Seattle (Chicago and New York City will be announced soon), get your ticket now.

4 Tips To Make You Fall In Love With Your Red Hair (All Over Again)

    By: Emily Clarke

Growing up as a redhead, feeling uncomfortable in my body was my norm. Hardly anyone shared my hair color; my skin was impossibly, and constantly, pale; and whether or not I was embarrassed, I frequently flushed deep red.

I had cousins with a richer red hue to their hair, friends with naturally bronzed skin, and siblings who never blushed. Whatever lottery decided appearances; I was convinced I’d lost. I felt alone: others had insecurities, but no one had my insecurities.

There was no escaping it either – everything about me was bright. Curious peers made unintentionally hurtful comments about how funny it was to make me blush on command, or how crazy my hair was. To make matters worse, makeup and hair styling techniques were a mystery to me. At that age, I could rock some heavy-duty eyeliner and a ponytail but anything beyond those may as well have been rocket science.

And then that most awkward phase, puberty, finished. My hair didn’t change color, but it became curly (another story altogether) and I stopped cutting it all off. My skin didn’t darken, but I noticed delicate patterns of freckles. My cheeks didn’t stop blushing, but it became constant and seemed intentional.

Now I wear my hair with pride. I feel solidarity with other redheads and curiosity from everyone else. I will always be frighteningly pale in the winter, and become a lobster all too easily in the summer, but I wouldn’t trade my hair for anyone else’s.

Here are my best tips to share in that glow of pride:

    1. Focus on the idea that your unique hair is incredibly special, not weird!

    2. Be patient. Especially in your teens. You will grow into yourself.

    3. Search out a community of other redheads, like you’ve got here on How to be a Redhead.

    4. Embrace your brightness and never be ashamed again.

There are so few of us redheads that we don’t seem to have any other option. We are a glorious pop of color.

    Get Vibrant

Interview with Celebrity Hair Stylist Rebekah Forecast

Rebekah Forecast was named by Allure’s Directory in March 2010 as one of the best hairstylists in NYC. Clients like Victoria’s Secret, with whom she has worked with for over 15 years, Vanity Fair, Harper’s Bazaar, Real Simple look to her for innovation, professionalism, and skill.

Her clients include Amber Heard, Diane Keaton, Miranda Kerr, Adriana Lima, and some of our favorite redheads, like Cynthia Nixon, Stella McCartney and Sarah Ferguson.

We had the opportunity to speak with Rebekah about her favorite hair tips for women with red hair:

H2BAR: What hair care advice do you have for natural redheads?

RF: Natural redheads tend to have dry hair, so use plenty of conditioner and go light on the heat styling.

H2BAR: What hair care advice do you have for those who are redheads ‘by choice’?

RF: Love a redhead! Keep the shine with a glaze or a color depositing shampoo/conditioner.

READ: 2015’s Best Color Depositing Shampoo For Redheads

H2BAR: We know you’ve worked on one of our favorite redheads, Cynthia Nixon [famous for her role on Sex and the City], many times. What is her favorite hairstyle?

RF: Cynthia is naturally a blonde but she is very into the shorter hair trend right now

H2BAR: Sarah Ferguson is a timeless redhead. What are your favorite ways to style her locks?

RF: She likes to look natural and not stiff so different size barrel irons are good to create a natural texture.

H2BAR: All redheads, natural and by choice, want to know how they can keep their hair vibrant all the time. Any expert tips?

RF: For natural redheads, use a great conditioner like the Hair Food line which will restore and retain hairs natural nutrients. For redheads by choice, use a color enhancing treatment like a glaze with warm tones to freshen up the warmth.

H2BAR: How do you feel about natural remedies for the hair?

RF: I have to say I stay away from natural remedies and let the professional hair care companies do the work for me. Natural products that are already formulated make my life so much easier, but if I do use a natural remedy it would be ocean water for beach waves when I am on photo shoots.

READ: The Best Beach Sprays for Red Hair

H2BAR: When a redhead sits down in your chair, do you try to match their style with their personality?

RF: Of course! Redheads need impact with their style to match their fiery personality!

H2BAR: What is your favorite hair trend for spring and summer?

    RF: Natural care free hair.

Lesson learned, redheads. Let your natural hair go free this summer.

5 Reasons Why Redhead Women Make The Best Wives

Madrid-based photographer Marta Soul is a founding member of NOPHOTO, a collective of contemporary photographers. Her projects reflect on the interplay between images and reality. In one of her series named, Idilios, she writes, ‘Idilios’ (Spanish lyrical word for ‘romances’ in English) shows a series of romantic recreations by the same redhead woman.

The series is constructed in an ideal context in order to accentuate the romantic love experience. So, we thought we’d combine the romantic with the factual using her beautiful artwork:

    1. Redhead women are extraordinary and loyal.

She will always be by your side.

    2. Redheads are usually fiery and opinionated, and will help to make the tough decisions.

    3. Redheads are passionate.

7 Redhead Fashion Myths To Break This Spring

      Updated: April 28, 2020

Many redheads think they cannot wear certain colors with their red hair. They either feel it’ll clash with their red hair (red, cranberry) or wash them out (white, beige, pink). It can take a redhead years to embrace color. We’re here to say redheads can wear any color. The trick? It has to be done right. Read on to learn some fashion myths every redhead should break this spring.

      1. MYTH: Redheads can’t wear red.

Don’t be afraid of this color clashing with your red hair. Red looks stunning on a redhead. Red hair, red lipstick and a red dress is a triple threat on any redhead. If you’re a little weary, start off with red pants or a red skirt. You can also incorporate a red necklace and then build up to a red top, turtleneck and jumper.

READ: Redheads The Color You Should Be Wearing

      2. MYTH: Redheads can’t wear bright blue.

Blue brings out the best features on a redhead. Try shades like baby blue or turquoise to really make your red hair pop. Pair either color with a bright fuchsia lip.

READ: Podcast S2, Ep9: Fashion 101 Tips for Redheads

      3. MYTH: Redheads can’t wear pink.

Light pink or a deep, high-intensity pink like fuchsia are two ways you can incorporate this bright color into your wardrobe. Try it on a dress, jumper or even on your lips.

      4. MYTH: Redheads can’t wear white.

There’s nothing like red hair, a white dress or blouse and a pop of pink lipstick. Another ‘redhead friendly’ triple threat. Pairing white with a pop of color on your lips will make the white not look washed out. Opt for a bright white instead of a yellow-based or beige-based white.

      5. MYTH: Redheads can’t wear yellow.

Yes, beauties, you can rock this gorgeous bright color. Try a yellow sundress in a shade that complements your skin tone (like yellow mustard or cool-toned yellow), or if you prefer, a piece of jewelry to add a hint of color to your outfit.

      6. MYTH: Redheads can’t wear beige.

Beige is another color that is yay or nay in the redhead community. Go for a printed beige and pair it with a bright lip or earth-toned eyeshadow.

      7. MYTH: Redheads can’t wear orange.

Burnt orange is one of our favorite ‘redhead friendly’ colors. It is our go-to during the fall but we’re starting to see it more and more in the spring and summer months. Try a burnt orange tee, dress or scarf.

      Rock it like a Redhead!
