How Redheads Can Get Sunscreen Stains Out of Clothes

Redheads need sunscreen, but we don't need stains!

My (and yours?) sunblock frustration: sunscreen stains and yellow rims on the cuffs of white t-shirts! I hate it. However, not using sunscreen is obviously not an option as a redhead with sensitive skin. I’ll share my tricks on how to avoid these stains and make t-shirts vibrant and clean again.

Unfortunately, sunscreen can leave unattractive marks on clothes, which are often not noticeable at first. I discover the annoying stains and edges after trips to the beach and it’s often really bad, especially after many trips to South Africa. I often wear light-colored blouses and some of them I couldn’t save, some I could clean. Oh, how I hate it, but not wearing sun protection is obviously not an option for redheads.

Where do these yellow spots come from?

The yellow spots and edges, unfortunately, come from the oil-soluble, organic UV filters contained in the sunscreen. Residues tend to stick stubbornly to the fabric. Of course, the best thing would always be to wash t-shirts, tops and bathing suits immediately after a day of sunscreen use. The longer the laundry remains unwashed, the more difficult it is for the stains to come out. But, it is not always feasible to wash clothing immediately.

Here are my tips and remedies for annoying yellow rims on blouses and shirts:

1. Prevent the stain if possible

Sunscreen should always be well absorbed when you pull the t-shirt over your head. This prevents acute stains. Try to apply the sunblock already in the morning and let it absorb into the skin before you dress. However, in summer temperatures, you usually sweat on your neck and that’s why it’s almost impossible to avoid a little fatty sunscreen collar or cuff.

2. Dishwashing detergent

Dishwashing detergent also dissolves grease when washing up, so it can also help quite well with sunscreen stains. The best time to use it is when the stain is still relatively fresh. Then you can pre-treat it with liquid dishwashing detergent, leave it to soak in for 30 minutes and then wash it in the washing machine. However, refrain from using bright-colored dishwashing liquids that are heavily dyed. The best option for redheads is to use gentle dishwashing detergents that are redhead-approved.

To remove stains: Wet the area with the sunscreen stain, add dishwashing detergent over it and rub it into the fabric. Leave it to soak for about 30 minutes and then wash the garment in the machine as usual.

3. Baking powder or baking soda

Baking power and baking soda are household all-rounders. These home remedies, therefore, have very well appreciated in my household. They work wonders on lighter clothes.

To remove stains: Wet the area with the sunscreen stain, sprinkle the baking soda or washing powder over it and rub it into the fabric. Leave it to soak for about 30 minutes and then wash the garment in the machine as usual.

4. Citric acid or vinegar

Citric acid and vinegar are also natural home remedies that can help remove sun lotion residues from clothes. However, you should be especially careful when using either of these on colored textiles. They could be discolored by the acid.

To remove stains: Dissolve 15 g of citric acid in 1 liter of warm water and soak the garment or stained area for about 2 hours. After this pre-treatment, you can wash the item in the machine as normal. If you use vinegar water, simply add 1 part vinegar essence to 5 parts warm water and soak the garment for about 1 hour. Then wash it as usual.

5. Mrs. Stewarts Liquid Bluing — For Whites Only

If you have white clothes with sunscreen stains, a great option is to use Mrs. Stewarts Liquid Bluing. Sometimes bleach can cause clothes to become yellow, but this product makes clothes whiter and prevents sunscreen staining!

To remove stains: Dilute bluing in 1 to 2 quarts of cold water. Add diluted bluing to wash water or final rinse water. Wash water should appear a light sky blue color.

7 ‘Redhead Friendly’ Colors to Wear for Spring

It’s finally springtime again, which means it’s time to break out that spring wardrobe. As redheads, many of us like to share our uniqueness with the world through our fiery hair and fashion. Finding redhead-approved clothes that are the right shade to match our hair and skin tone is key to creating an essential wardrobe. When putting together your spring wardrobe this year, consider wearing these seven ‘Redhead- Friendly’ colors:

1. Lavender

I was once told that lavender looks fantastic on me and is the perfect complement to my skin tone. Now I always try and look for lavender-colored clothes. The light purples remind me of decorated Easter eggs and freshly bloomed lilacs which always put me in the spring mood. Isla Fisher was photographed recently rockin’ the lavender shade while riding her bike in Los Angeles.

2. Peach

As a redhead, peach has always been one of my spring color staples. A combination of red, yellow, and white, the peach makes up all the colors that redheads are told not to wear, but they still create the perfect combination to enhance our skin tone. Jessica Chastain wore a peach gown at the 2014 London premiere of Insterstellar, and it will always be a memorable moment for redheads.

3. Emerald Green

For a redhead, emerald green is a must for a year-round wardrobe. While great for fall, winter, and summer, emerald green is the perfect color for spring, as your red hair will stand out even more amongst the greening grass and trees.

4. Yellow

While yellow is considered another one of those colors redheads shouldn’t wear, redheads like Jessica Chastain have set the standard for redheads to rock the color yellow. Before you embark on wearing this daring color, get yourself familiar with the secrets to wearing yellow as a redhead.

Madelaine Petsch brilliantly wears emerald green and yellow together — and it looks gorgeous with her red hair!

5. Cerulean

Rated as one of Pantone’s biggest colors for spring this year, cerulean will make any redhead look like they are floating on air. For those that don’t know, cerulean is a dark shade of sky blue. Julianne Moore has worn this classic shade in many photo shoots and red carpets, and you can see why!

6. Beige

The perfect spring color to make you feel fresh and as if you are starting anew, step into beige this season to take on the new meaning of being reborn. This shade of white can be worn many ways as the ideal complement to your red locks and skin-tone.

Watch Adrienne, the co-founder of How to be a Redhead, rock a beige turtle neck while unboxing a recent H2BAR Box:

7. Black

To contrast your red hair, don’t be afraid to wear black during springtime and season it up with fun, colorful accessories that will help make your hair pop. In the photo below, Amy Adams wears a long trench coat with a pop of emerald green — oh, so ‘Redhead Friendly’.

These seven colors will make your red hair shine this spring as you Rock it like a Redhead!

8 Nail Polish Shades Redheads Will Love This Spring

With the start of the spring season comes an opportunity to freshen up your nail polish game, redheads. Are you ready to embrace the latest trends of pastel polishes and vibrant shades of green lacquers?! I am!

Read on to discover my favorite seasonal selections:

Pastel Pinks

Despite a fabulous redhead being the lead in the famous film Pretty in Pink, pastels are not always the easiest colors in the world for gingers to rock. But don’t let this challenging hue deter you from enjoying the hottest polish trend of the season. The trick with pastels is to find a shade that best complements your undertones. If you are like many natural gingers and experience redness in your complexion, aim to wear a neutral polish that balances your coloring rather than a shade that is overly warm or extremely cool toned.

Redhead-Approved Polishes: Essie Gel Couture Sheer Fantasy, OPI Passion, China Glaze Minimalist Momma

Pastel Greens

After you’ve mastered your perfect shade of pastel pink, you can easily find a shade of pastel green that will complement any complexion. Pretty pastels are a fun way to welcome the airier spring season with style while still remaining elegant.

Redhead-Approved Polishes: Zoya Ireland, Zoya Tracie, OPI I’m Sooo Swamped

Vibrant Green

Have you ever met a redhead who didn’t look incredible in green? If pastels aren’t your thing or if you are ready for a change of pace, elevate your manicure with a shade of vibrant green. This gorgeous color is the ideal spring companion and reminds us of all things new and natural.

Redhead-Approved Polishes: Revlon Posh, OPI Rated Pea-G, Orly Green with Envy

Nothing Rhymes with Purple…but You’ll Look Good Wearing It

When it comes to manicures, a majestic shade of purple is perfection. This color is so well suited for redhead royalty. While an excellent choice at any time of the year, it is the ideal color to transition your heavier winter wardrobe into lighter, brighter tones for spring.

Redhead-Approved Polishes: Essie Dial It Up, China Glaze Creative Fantasy, OPI Let’s Take an Elfie

Mannequin Mani

If you’re the type of redhead who loves an effortless neutral, the mannequin mani is the polish trend for you. Choose your best nude shade that seamlessly blends into your skin tone. This understated look works for work but also matches anything you might wear during your off time.

Redhead-Approved Polishes: Essie Ballet Slippers, Deborah Lippmann Naked

Poppy

Perhaps a mannequin mani is too demure for your liking and you’re on the search for a bold pop of color that will boost your mood. Poppy orange is here for you. This vibrant shade of not quite red, not quite orange will be stunning on all redheads and will carry you through the spring and summer months ahead.

Redhead-Approved Polishes: OPI Living on the Bula-Vard!, Smith & Cult Tang Bang

Ultimate Gray + Illuminating Yellow

Pantone’s official colors of the year (a mid-tone blue/gray and a serene yet bright yellow) make excellent choices for the spring season. Switch things up with a gray manicure paired with an unexpected splash of yellow as an accent nail. This color pairing truly tells a story of moving from darkness to light, winter to spring, and challenging times to a brighter future ahead.

Redhead-Approved Polishes: Essie Toned Down, OPI Destined to be a Legend; OPI Good Grief, China Glaze Lemon Fizz

What are your favorite spring nail polish colors? If you could create a spring nail polish what color would it be and what would you name it? Tell us in the comments below and have a happy and healthy spring season!

How Redheads Can Go Environmentally Green This St. Patrick’s Day

Great last minute tips on how to celebrate, too!

    Kiss me, I’m eco-friendly!

Being trendsetters in our own right, with only 2% of the world redheaded, taking a unique approach to St. Patty’s Day this year should not be difficult. While St. Patty’s Day usually consists of hearty meats, wearing green, and kissing the Irish, all redheads can take a “greener” approach.

As redheads whose sensitive skin requires us to use natural and organic beauty products — we can go a step further and also take care of the earth. With most synthetic products harmful to our skin, we can go extra “green” on St. Patrick’s Day.

Celebrate this fun holiday by celebrating in an environmentally-friendly way. Here are some ideas:

    1. Go meatless for the day

Corned beef & cabbage and shepherd’s pie are the go-to meals for St. Patty’s day, but with more people going vegan, there are endless options to make our favorite Irish meals better for the environment. Vegan shepherd’s pie with lentils and corned beef & cabbage with jackfruit are great plant-based alternatives. Plus, the benefits of eating a plant-based diet go beyond a decrease in the production of greenhouse gasses but are key to keep a redhead’s heart as strong as the fire in our hair.

    2. Embrace eco-friendly makeup

While actual green-colored makeup should be the staple of any redhead’s St. Patty’s Day look, make it extra green this year with eco-friendly makeup products.

For the redhead looking to cover up blemishes, use the matcha green vegan 2nd Skin Corector from 100% Pure. To get the perfect eyelid look, use this vegan and cruelty-free Green Eyeliner from Glossier.

    3. Give a kiss of life

While no one should ever try to kiss a redhead for luck on St. Patrick’s Day. But, we can give the kiss of life by planting a tree. One Tree Planted allows one to donate $1 towards planting a tree in the world’s most deforested areas.

    4. Wear environmentally “green” clothes

As fashion brands look to be more sustainable, H&M has a great line of sustainable fashion options to choose from for your St. Patty’s Day look. Try pairing their Green Rib Knit Cardigan made from a LivaEco Viscose Blend with a pair of slim high ankle jeans stitched out of recycled cotton for the perfect complement to your red locks. Or, like pictured, go for an all-green look.

Another great way to break the cycle of fast fashion is by wearing a previous St. Patty’s Day outfit or go thrift shopping to cut down on the 11 million tons of textiles put in landfills by the US each year.

As you embrace going green this St. Patrick’s Day, don’t forget to Rock it like a Redhead!

3 St. Patrick’s Day Outfits Ideas for Redheads

With a year under our belt in this pandemic, we are now all professionals at celebrating holidays at home. But as redheads, there’s no way we could go without celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in some form, especially when it comes to wearing our lucky color: green!

So whether you are gathering with a small group of friends or enjoying a pint on your couch by yourself, here are some ‘redhead friendly’ outfits that will put you in the St. Patrick’s Day spirit, and hopefully bring all of us some luck for the rest of the year!

      Lucky Loungewear

If your plans include spending the morning making a large Irish breakfast, binge-watching Derry Girls, and ending the night with a pint on your couch, do it in loungewear style with a pair of 525 Tie Dye Joggers and an Aerie Oversized Long Sleeve Voop T-Shirt.

      Sweat out the Guinness

While I tend to take holidays off from a sweat session, it usually makes sense to get in a solid workout on St. Patrick’s day before indulging in a few pints. This set from These green leggings from Outdoor Voices should help with the motivation to get moving, before saying “slainte”!

      St. Patrick’s Day Date Night

This year is the year of “date night at home”, so while we may not be dressing to impress at the bars, we can still get dolled up for a night at home with your significant other –– green is a redhead’s lucky color after all. Try this 7 For All Mankind Cowl Neck Satin Tank Top or Retrofete Jessie Tee.

9 Fun Facts About St. Patrick’s Day to Share With Friends

How many of you didn't know most of this?! Us either..

March 17th has arrived, dear redhead readers! It’s time to pull out your lucky green shirts and partake in a little Irish celebration. But before you get around to imbibing a tasty Guinness and chasing leprechauns, be sure to school your friends and family about these intriguing St. Patrick’s Day facts.

      1. When it became a ‘redhead holiday’

Many assume most people from Ireland are redheads, so they associate St. Patrick’s Day with the crimson hair shade. Although Ireland has the highest number of red-haired people per capita in the world, it’s total percentage of redheads is only about 10%.

      2. Clover patrol

The odds of finding a four-leaf clover is about 1 in 10,000…even rarer than being born with red hair! Shamrocks are revered as a sacred plant and represent the arrival of spring.

      3. Irish pride

Conflicting records show that the very first St. Patrick’s Day celebration in the United States was held on March 17, 1601, in a Spanish colony that is present-day St. Augustine Florida or in Boston in 1737; the first St. Patrick’s Day parade was held in New York City in March of 1762.

      4. March 17th

The holiday is observed on March 17th to mark the death of Saint Patrick who died in Ireland in 461 AD.

      5. St. Patrick wasn’t born with the name

St. Patrick was actually born Maewyn Succat, according to legend; he changed his name to Patricius, or Patrick, which derives from the Latin term for “father figure,” when he became a priest.

      6. Leaping leprechauns

In Irish folklore, leprechauns are mystical fairies who appear as tiny men who make shoes. Legend says that if you catch a leprechaun, he must grant you three wishes.

      7. A blue St. Patrick’s Day?

Saint Patrick was actually associated with the color sky blue. Green became a prominent color connected to the holiday after the Irish Independence Day movement in the 18th century.

      8. St. Patrick was not Irish!

Many people who are not Irish celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and they are in good company. The man himself was born in Wales, not Ireland. Saint Patrick was kidnapped by Irish raiders at the age of 16 and sold as a slave to a Celtic priest in Northern Ireland. After six years, he escaped back to Britain but eventually returned to Ireland as a Christian missionary.

      9. Lucky Charms

Horseshoes are said to be a symbol of luck due to their metal warding off evil spirits. Superstition warns that horseshoes must be found spontaneously in order to be considered lucky. Be sure to hang your horseshoe facing up in order to keep your luck from falling out!

Do you celebrate St. Patrick’s Day? What are your favorite traditions or things to do on or around March 17th? Do you have any tales of Irish folklore? Be sure to share it with us in the comments below and have a marvelous holiday, redheads.
