Sunburned Lips: The Best Ways Redheads Can Soothe and Heal Them

Protect your pucker from damaging UV rays!

When your body is exposed to the sun without the proper protection, you run the risk of getting a sunburn. Did you know your lips are one of the most common places to get a sunburn? You may already know redheads are more susceptible to melanoma too. Take your lip sunburns seriously because they are extra vulnerable because they can’t be covered. Here’s how to prevent lip sunburn and heal a lip sunburn if you’ve already have one:

How to prevent a lip sunburn

The best way to prevent sunburned lips is to apply a lip balm with SPF in it. It’s important to apply SPF even if you’re wearing lipstick because the rays can still penetrate the color and burn your lips underneath. It’s crucial you reapply your SPF throughout the day as it can be wiped away with the intake of food and water as well as by sweat and saliva. If you are wearing lipstick and don’t want to remove it to apply SPF, then find a lipstick with SPF built into the formula.

Additionally, it is important to avoid clear lip glosses and lip oils, as they will not provide any protection and may cause your lips to burn faster.

How to heal sunburned lips

If you are suffering from sunburned lips, there are a few ways to get relief and help them heal:

1. The most important thing is to keep them moisturized and hydrated. You can do this by increasing your water intake and also frequently applying a hydrating lip balm.

2. If you have discomfort or pain on your lips from your sunburn, try soothing it with a cooling lip balm, aloe vera gel or ice cubes or ice roller.

3. Try to avoid applying lip color to sunburnt lips as it may irritate them.

4. Avoiding the sun is also crucial for healing sunburnt lips. If you cannot avoid going outside, try wearing a face mask or hat to reduce the direct sunlight on the lips.

5. Always wear SPF!

How Your Redhead Skin Can Benefit from Ice Rolling

Try ultra beneficial beauty hack!

Ice rolling is a beauty technique that has become quite popular in the last few years. Ice rollers can be purchased for under $15! We’ve talked about the benefits of incorporating ice into your redhead skin routine before, but ice rolling makes it easier and removes the mess of melting ice.

Use a product like this when ice rolling:

ESARORA Ice Roller for Face & Eye, $13

Read about the incredible benefits:

Minimize redness

Many redheads suffer from redness of the skin when they become warm, after a soak in the sauna, or after exercising. This can be frustrating and embarrassing if your skin is bright red. Minimize that redness by doing a few minutes of ice rolling to soothe the skin.

Reduce inflammation

The cold temperatures help constrict blood vessels, which decreases inflammation, swelling, and puffiness (almost instantly). This can be perfect for calming puffy eyes, decreasing the size of blemishes, and reducing the appearance of broken capillaries.

Ease pain from blemishes

If you’ve got a particularly painful pimple you might want some relief from the throbbing. Applying some ice will temporarily numb the area to ease the pain. Just be careful that you don’t apply too much ice and damage the skin.

Cool a sunburn

If you have a sunburn you might feel the heat radiating from it. Cool that burn and soothe your skin with a little ice rolling. Not only will it help you feel better, but it will help reduce the redness of the burn.

4 Redhead Fashion Do’s For Summer

Ready, set, summer!

As the weather heats up, we get to explore a part of our redhead wardrobe that we might skip-past in our daily routine. Finding your warm-weather style can take a little practice, but with these tried and true redhead fashion tips for summer you’ll be ready for wherever it takes you:

1. Play with color

When it comes to summer colors, wear what you like and what you think looks best on you. Throw the old color rules out the window and rock what you want. Whether bold colors or muted neutrals are your thing, the best colors are the ones you’re confident in.

H2BAR TIP: Want to look ultra-chic? Try a monochromatic look in your favorite color. Match your outfit, accessories, and even your makeup for the full effect. Madelaine Petsch, in the photo below, opted for a red suit, red lips and slicked back her red hair for a boss-girl look. Take it from her, coordinating colors will really pull the look together.

READ: Why Madelaine Petsch Should Be One of Your Redhead Style Icons

2. Layering is key

Layering might feel like a trend for fall and winter, but it works for summer too. Pick lightweight materials that you can easily layer for more sun coverage and an easy way to change up your look. You can also layer jewelry for a chic addition to your outfit.

H2BAR TIP: Get a little more coverage out of a cropped top or tank by adding an oversized button-down for an effortless look.

3. Accessories make the outfit

If you’ve got a simple summer outfit that isn’t quite complete, try adding some accessories to it. Try matching your bag to your shoes, adding a hat for sun protection, or piling on the bling with rings, necklaces, and earrings.

H2BAR TIP: Wearing warmer tones? Opt for gold or rose gold jewelry. Wearing cool tones? Opt for silver and white gold. Wearing a mix of neutrals? Don’t be afraid to mix metals!

4. Don’t be afraid to show some skin

If you’re feeling like you’re not ready to show your summer style because you’re still feeling like you’ve got your winter body…think again! Every body is a summer body and you shouldn’t be afraid to show some skin. Just don’t forget your sunscreen!

H2BAR TIP: If you’re still not feeling confident in your beautiful body, try wearing a one-piece that gets you out of your comfort zone every day paired with something you love the look of. Before you know it your confidence will soar.

4 Beauty and Confidence Tips for Redhead Bridesmaids

Look and feel your best on this special day

It’s wedding season, and being a redhead bridesmaid is a lot of fun, but it can also be a lot of stress. There are dresses to buy and hair and makeup to be done, and if you’re the only redhead in the bridal party, you might run into some issues. Here are a few tips on how to make sure that both you and the bride are happy with your look.

    1. Be vocal during the dress shopping process

With fiery hair and fair skin, we know what looks good on us and what does not. Of course, the bride is going to have an idea of what she wants, but if she asks for input on colors don’t be afraid to speak up. The bride isn’t the one wearing the bridesmaid’s dresses, and while it’s important that she love the look, it’s also important that everyone feels their best.

READ: 5 Tips on Picking the Right Makeup Artist for Redhead Brides

    2. Don’t be pressured

Requesting you wear a certain dress or have a certain hairdo for a wedding is totally normal, but there are boundaries you have to learn to say no to. Maybe your bride wants everyone to have a glowy golden tan for the wedding, but that’s not your thing. And if she asks you to change your hair color, run! It’s not normal to want your friends to change their appearance for your wedding, so it’s okay to say no.

    3. Find inspiration pictures for your hair/makeup

When you’re getting your hair and makeup done it’s important to have inspo pics to help show the stylists what you want. Find photos of makeup looks that are close to your complexion and even pictures of girls with red hair to get the best idea of how things will look. If you bring in a photo of someone with a much darker complexion, your look might end up drastically different than you’re expecting.

    4. Bring your own supplies

Some makeup artists may have a wide variety of colors to choose from, but some may not. Always bring your own foundation in case they don’t have a close color match. It can also be good to bring your own lip products, Finally Have Brows redhead eyebrow product, and even redhead bobby pins in case they aren’t used to working with redheads.

How To Maintain Your Redhead Eyebrows at Home Between Appointments

Never fret over your red brows again!

    Updated: November 2nd, 2023

When your redhead eyebrows are freshly groomed an amazing transformation happens: your smile gets bigger. You stand a little taller. Your red hair looks a little brighter. When a single part of your redhead beauty routine holds enough power to make or break your day, you want to make sure they look their best in between waxing or threading appointments.

Here are a few easy ways to maintain your brows at home between waxes:

    1. Clean up stray hairs

If your brows are looking a little messy, try cleaning up the stray hairs by tweezing them. Follow the general shape of your brow and be sure to avoid over-plucking. Another option is to use an eyebrow razor. This is an easy, pain-free way to clean up the edges. Go slowly and don’t go too close to the brow to avoid changing the shape.

    Dorco Tinkle Eyebrow Razor, $5

    2. Use a brow gel

When brows become grown out, they often get messy and unruly. Tame them with a brow gel like H2BAR’s Finally Have Brows Tinted Eyebrow Gel to keep them looking neat and polished. For a simple yet chic look, try brushing them up until you reach the arch and then brush back from the arch to the tail. The product will also keep the hairs tamed because most redheads have coarse brow hairs.

    3. Trim your brows

Trimming your brows takes a steady hand, so only attempt it if you’re confident in your skills. Take an eyebrow brush or a clean spoolie and brush the brows upwards. Then, using the brush as a guide, trim just the tips of the hairs to get a clean, polished look.

Duo Eyebrow Brush Professional Angled Eye Brow Brush and Spoolie Brush, $4

    4. Do a little at-home waxing

WARNING: This is not the top recommended option but we know some redheads prefer waxing. Redheads often have more sensitive skin, so be sure to use a gentle wax intended for the face and if you’re not 100% confident in the process, don’t do it.

Wax strips are the easiest and least messy to use. Use small strips to clean up the edges around and between the brows. If you accidentally get the wax on a portion of the brow you don’t want to remove, simply use warm water or oil to separate it from the hairs.

Top Summer Redhead Makeup Problems + How to Address Them

Flawless makeup tips are here, redheads!

When the weather gets hotter, our redhead makeup can struggle to stay on our skin. This is caused by the heat, oils in our skin, and sweat. Here are a few ways to keep your redhead makeup looking flawless all day long, even in the summer heat.

    Problem: Melting & creasing

Fix: If you notice your makeup is quite literally melting off your face it’s probably because it doesn’t have a good base to grip to. Primer is essential during the summer months and can help your makeup stay all day long. Opt for a primer with an SPF to keep your face prepped and protected.

In addition to primer, it’s important to set your makeup to avoid creasing. A combination of setting powder and a setting spray mist will help your makeup hold on no matter the weather.

Listen to Season 3, Episode 11 of the How to be a Redhead podcast! Jane Levy’s makeup artist talks about how to combat creasing:

    Problem: Sunburnt skin

Fix: Ever notice your skin turning pink under your makeup? That’s because you can still get sunburnt through your makeup if there’s no SPF! It’s important to use a facial SPF and makeup with SPF in it to keep your complexion looking nice and even.

Even your lips can get sunburnt, so be sure to wear a lip balm with SPF under your lipstick.

    Problem: Runny mascara & eyeliner

Sweat and oils from the skin can cause your mascara to run. Opt for waterproof mascara or even false brown lashes to keep everything locked in place. Pick a super stay eyeliner and avoid eyeliner under the lower lash line during the hotter months.

    Problem: Mismatched foundation

As redheads, we don’t usually get much of a tan in the summertime, but we may see our skin becoming just a shade or two darker. If you have a slight tan or have opted for a faux tan, you will probably notice your foundation doesn’t match your skin as flawlessly as it used to.

If you don’t want to purchase all new foundation for the summer months, try buying a sample or travel size a few shades darker and mixing your own shade for summer.

How to Protect Your Red Hair From Sun, Chlorine, and Salt Water

Don't let the summer fun dry out your uniquely gorgeous hair!

There’s nothing quite like spending a day outside with warm summer sun and refreshing ocean or pool water. Summer days are meant for enjoying, but redheads have to take the proper precautions. The summer sun and heat can do damage to your skin and your red hair too. It can cause hair to color-fade (yes, natural redheads too) and become frizzy/greasy. That’s why it’s important to take preventative steps to keep your hair healthy. Try these ‘Redhead-Friendly’ ways to protect your hair from sun, chlorine and salt water:

    1. Cover your hair

Pop on a cute sun hat or headscarf to keep your locks from getting too much sun exposure. If you don’t have a hat, sit under an umbrella or seek shade to keep your red hair (and skin) protected. The best thing you can do is wear a hat under the shade!

Did you hear there is a free sun hat in the Summer Deluxe H2BAR Box? Scoop one up now:

    2. Hair sunscreen

In the recent years, many brands have started to develop mainstream hair sunscreen products to keep hair produced from the sun. Double up by using a product that both moisturizes and shields your hair. Try this one from Coola. We love it because it’s a powerful blend of plant-based antioxidants and sunscreen to lock-in color (natural and ‘by choice’) and strengthen damaged red hair.

    3. Stay hydrated

When you drink water, it spreads to all parts of your body nourishing and hydrating from head to toe. Studies show that a hydration causes softer, more voluminous hair, and can keep heat damage from having such a strong effect on the body. Make sure to drink at least 64 oz of water daily, and more if you’re out in the sun. Enjoy a water bottle like this to easily add in lemon or fruit of your choice

    4. Skip hot tools

During the summer months, it’s smart to skip the hot tools as much as you can. The added heat combined with the summer sun will leave your red hair feeling frizzy and fried. Let your hair air dry, do a heatless braid look, or pull it back in a cute protective style.

    5. Use a leave-in conditioner

If your hair does get exposed to heat and sunshine, try nourishing it back to health with a leave-in conditioner. This one from RAINCRY will help strengthen and repair the hair. Before going for a swim in the pool or ocean, wet your hair completely and thoroughly applying a leave-in conditioner. Your hair will absorb the conditioner instead of the chlorine or salt water!

    6. Get a clear gloss

Hair can loose its shine over time and even more quickly when it’s in the sun or hot water. At the salon, get a clear gloss—a shiny seal that gradually washes out. If you’re a natural redhead, this is totally safe for your hair! It will just increase shine. You can reap similar benefits with an at-home glaze, like Oribe Glaze for Beautiful Hair Color.

The big takeaway here is moisture!

How Redheads Can Get a ‘Healthy Glow’ Without UV Tanning

    Get glowing, redheads!

Most redheads are highly susceptible to sunburns. This makes it super hard to ever get a “glow” like our olive-skinned besties. Overexposure to sun and UV rays cause skin damage and premature signs of aging. Instead, try one of these summer hacks for glowing redhead skin without the harmful rays.

    Spray tan

Spray tans are a great option for those who want a true tan in the summer. The key to a good redhead faux tan is to not take it overboard. It might be tempting to get that golden bronze look but it will look out of place with your complexion and hair. Instead, opt for a light glow that’s just a shade or two darker than your natural tone.

Tip: Go to a spray tan professional because it will lead to better results than a spray tan booth or at-home spray system.

    Self-tanners

If you don’t want to hit the spray tanner, or you need a little color quick, try an at-home self-tan. With self-tanner, you have a little less control over the color and it takes a little trial and error to learn the right application techniques. Find a self-tanner that goes on smoothly with a color guide and be sure to exfoliate and moisturize rough spots ahead of time. Also, make sure to always wear a self-tanning glove! It’s the secret to get an at-home application.

‘Redhead-Friendly’ Recommendations: St. Tropez Tanning Mousse | Loving Tan Mousse – Medium | Bondi Sands Self Tanning Foam Light/Medium

    Tanning drops

Tanning drops give you a lot more control over your color and coverage. They are also pretty foolproof. Simply mix a few drops into your favorite moisturizer and lather up. Tanning drops are also wonderful for helping your face stay the same color as your body.

‘Redhead-Friendly’ Recommendations: Isle of Paradise Tanning Drops – Light I Tanologist Drops

    Tanning wipes

Tanning wipes are quick, convenient, leave you streak-free and if you’re an H2BAR Box subscriber, you know we love these wipes! Tan Towel is perfect for adding a little glow on the go or touching up an existing tan. Tanning wipes don’t last as long as a traditional faux tan, so if you aren’t loving the color, don’t worry it will wash off in a few days.

    Body makeup

If you’re looking for a quick fix that won’t stain your skin or leave you with messy clean-up, try body oil/makeup. You can easily achieve a smooth, glowy look through properly placed makeup that will wash off daily. For full coverage try a body foundation, or add a body highlight for a subtle glow in all the right places.

‘Redhead-Friendly’ Recommendation: Skin and Senses Irresistible Glow Shimmer Oil

    Daily moisturizer with tint

Another great option is a moisturizer with a tint or shimmer. It will add just a little color to your skin while keeping it hydrated and soft.
