Vitamin D: What To Know, Deficiencies and How to Tell If You Need Supplements

Redheads produce their own vitamin D, but is it enough?

It’s widely known and a scientific fact that redheads make their own vitamin D, but does that mean that we don’t need it from any other source? The answer is no, redheads still need vitamin D, and here’s why.

The amount of vitamin D that redheads produce isn’t always enough. Depending on the seasons, where you live and your own genetics, you may need more vitamin D than your body is producing. If you’re health conscious and convinced you’re eating healthy enough to get vitamin D, not so fast. According to the Mayo Clinic, few foods contain the vitamin. And according to the National Institutes of Health, the best food sources of vitamin D are fatty fish like salmon, tuna, and mackerel. Milk is a major source of vitamin D, but with many lactose and tolerant, it can be difficult to get vitamin D from this source.

Many redheads stay out of the sun and use as much sun protection as possible and while this is beneficial for our skin, it might mean we are lacking in vitamin D. The same can be said if you live in a climate that doesn’t see a lot of sunshine or spend a lot of time indoors.

Some symptoms of vitamin D deficiency are:

  • Being sick or getting infections often
  • Fatigue and tiredness
  • Bone and back pain
  • Bone loss
  • Depression
  • Hair loss
  • Muscle pain
  • Weight gain
  • Anxiety

The best way to know if you’re lacking vitamin D is to always speak with your doctor. If you are deficient, it’s as easy as taking a vitamin D supplement and increasing your intake of food that contains vitamin D.

The Best Setting Sprays For Smudge-Proof Redhead Makeup

Stay flawless + keep your makeup on all day

Doing your redhead makeup takes time and energy, and you don’t want your hard work melting off halfway through the day. Setting sprays are ideal because they keep your makeup in place –– the difficult task is to find one that is redhead-approved. That’s why we’ve gathered our favorite setting sprays as well as some tips and tricks for smudge-proof makeup:

1. Prep your skin

You need a good base for makeup that lasts all day, and that starts with prepping your skin. Exfoliating and using moisturizer will help your skin hold the makeup better so it lasts longer.

2. Use a primer

Just like when you paint a wall, you have to use a primer before you apply foundation. Not only will the primer help your makeup last longer, but it will also give you a smooth, even surface to work on. You should also apply primer to your eyelids and even your lips for better holding power.

3. Opt for oil-free

One of the main reasons your makeup melts off throughout the day is because your face is producing oils. These oils are natural and you can’t exactly stop them, but you can cut down on shine and excess oil by using an oil-free foundation.

4. Use a setting powder

If you’re using all liquid and creme-based products, it’s important to use a setting powder in areas that may crease or get oily. This usually includes your under-eye and t-zone.

5. Finish your look with a redhead-approved setting spray:

Simply spritz at the end of your look and you will be in awe over how long your makeup stays in place!

Tips for Redhead Teens Who Are New to Makeup

Make this fun makeup-starter experience even more enjoyable!

Being a teen and starting to play around with redhead makeup is such a fun experience. If you’re a redhead teen, you might feel a little lost on where to start. If your friends are blonde or brunette, you might notice their makeup doesn’t quite fit you or look like you think it should. Here are a few tips for redhead teens getting started with makeup:

Tip #1: Practice good skincare

Beautiful makeup starts with beautiful skin. Skincare in your teen years can be tough. You’re dealing with hormonal acne and your skin is ever-changing. Establishing a good redhead skincare routine will help your makeup look that much better. Check out our skincare starter tips for redhead teens to kick things off.

Once you’ve got your skincare routine down, you’ll be ready to start trying out makeup. It’s important to have a good base to work with, so learn the basics before you start trying unique colors and styles.

Tip #2: Choose the right foundation

To give your skin an even tone and texture, as well as cover imperfections, use a redhead-approved foundation. Using our foundation recommendations, always use the same color as your skin because it will help everything look smooth and flawless.

There are a lot of different kinds of foundations you can use. For redhead teens just starting out, we recommend a CC cream, a tinted moisturizer, or a sheer coverage foundation. You want to make sure your foundation matches your skin tone as closely as possible. Getting color matched at a makeup store is the best way to ensure you have a good match.

Learning how to apply foundation properly is key to having it look natural. You can apply your foundation with a damp makeup sponge or a makeup brush. Be sure to blend all the way to the edges of your face and down your neck for a natural finish. Liquid foundation goes a long way, start with just a little and apply more as needed.

Tip #3: Start with the basics when it comes to eyeliner

Eye makeup can be tricky to learn, so it’s best to start with the basics. Opt for neutral tones when you’re starting out and use a light hand when applying eye makeup. Here are a few of the basic products you should use to start out with:

  • Mascara – Opt for brown mascara instead of black. It will look more natural with your red hair.
  • Eyeshadow – Pick a simple eye shadow palette with lots of neutral colors to start.
  • Eye liner – This is one of the harder products to learn how to use, but tutorials online and lots of practice can help you perfect it. Again, a brown eyeliner will look more natural with your red hair.

Tip #4: Make the right choices when using blush, bronzer, and highlighter

If you want to accentuate your face and your natural features, you can use things like blush, bronzer, and highlight. Selecting the right color for these products can make or break your look. Opt for shades that are close to your skin tone and apply lightly while you get the feel for them.

How Redheads Can Exfoliate Their Lips

Keep your lips soft!

Updated: September 27, 2023

Many redheads take care of their sensitive skin, but forget about their lips. Dry/cold weather can make lips crack, swell and even peel. If you’re not exfoliating your lips, it’s time to start! Lip exfoliation is key for soft, healthy lips and the perfect application of your favorite lipsticks. During the colder months, lip exfoliation can help prevent uncomfortable chapped lips. Here’s everything redheads need to know about lip exfoliation:

Why is lip exfoliating so important?

Just like the skin on the rest of our face and body, our lips get dry and need attention. Many people think that simply applying chapstick or lip balm will solve the problem, but you need to get rid of the dead skin to prevent peeling, flaking, and cracking. Not only is lip exfoliation important for healthy lips, but it’s also the key to having a flawless finish when you apply lip products like lipstick.

How do I exfoliate my lips?

Your lips are a different thickness of skin than your face, so it’s best to use products specifically made for your lips. This also ensures that if you get any product in your mouth it is safe. You can use lip exfoliating masks, lip scrubs, actual organic sugar (if you’re going DIY) or any other gentle lip exfoliating products. Opt for something for sensitive skin and exfoliate once or twice a week to keep from over-exfoliating.

Other steps to take care of your lips

While you’re getting your exfoliating routine down, make sure you’re also hydrating internally by drinking plenty of water, and externally by applying a moisturizing lip balm that is free of chemicals and dyes. It’s also important to apply SPF to your lips when outdoors during the day.

What Happens When Redheads Use Purple Shampoo?

Is Purple Shampoo Right for Redheads?

If you find yourself in the online beauty community, you will often see people using purple shampoo on their blonde hair, and you might be tempted to try using it on your red hair. But first, let us explain what purple shampoo does. It works wonders for removing brassiness from blonde hair. But, what actually happens when a redhead uses purple shampoo? You would think  purple shampoo might make red hair fade, but the results will depend on if your hair is naturally red or dyed red:

Purple shampoo on natural red hair

If you’re a natural redhead with no dye in your hair, purple shampoo will most likely have little effect on your color. If you have highlights or a lot of lighter red/orange/blonde in your hair, it may help to remove some of the yellow tones to keep your hair looking redder and less bronzy, but overall don’t expect a big change because purple shampoo isn’t meant for red hair. Consult with your hair stylist on if you should use purple shampoo on your natural red hair.

Purple shampoo on dyed red hair

If you’re a redhead ‘by choice’, you might want to use purple shampoo to extend the life of your color. You can also use a blue or purple shampoo to tone down any yellow or overly orange areas to keep your rich red color. Warning: If you’re going for a more natural gingery color, you may want to avoid using purple shampoo as it will tone down the orange undertones.

What Redheads Should Know About Under Eye Eczema

Stop the flare ups!

Eczema is very common during the fall and winter months. When the air gets cool, your skin might start to get dry, itchy, red, and flakey. If you’re suffering from eczema, especially under your eyes or on your eyelids, here are a few do’s and don’ts to keep it under wraps.

DO: Hydrate the dry skin

If your skin is dry, itchy, or irritated it’s important to keep it hydrated while treating your eczema. Letting the skin dry out too much may lead to further irritation. Use an unscented moisturizer that is safe for sensitive skin as well as an under-eye cream intended for eczema treatment. If your eczema is severe, use a medicated cream.

DON’T: Use harsh exfoliants

It can be tempting to exfoliate off all the dead, dry skin, but exfoliating the area will only lead to further irritation. Avoid using harsh exfoliants and let the area heal fully before getting rid of excess dead skin.

DO: Use a primer when applying makeup

You should avoid wearing makeup during an eczema flare-up, but if your eczema is mild or at bay, you will want to apply a primer before applying your makeup. Not only will it help to even out the area, but it will also help to keep the area free of makeup that could irritate the skin. Use a primer you know your skin reacts well to that is low in chemicals and fragrance-free.

READ: How And Why Redheads Should Apply a Primer Before Makeup

DON’T: Rub, itch, or pick at dry skin

Try to avoid touching your eczema spots as much as possible. Picking at, itching, or rubbing the skin will only get it dirty and cause further irritation. Touch the skin only when applying the product and always wash your hands thoroughly.

DO: Consult a dermatologist

Mild eczema can be treated at home, but if you have severe eczema or you’re not getting relief from your eczema, consult a dermatologist. They can help you figure out the best course of action to take and find the right products for your skin, including medicated products to give you relief faster.

READ: 5 Things Every Redhead Should Know When Visiting a Dermatologist

DON’T: Wash your face with hot water

Hot water can cause the skin to become dry and since your eczema is already dry, you want to avoid further irritation. Wash your face with lukewarm water and avoid excess heat on your face.

How Redheads Can Treat Signs of Aging on Your Neck, Chest & Hands

Here's how to combat aging:

We all know that our faces can show early signs of aging through wrinkles, fine lines, and sunspots, but your neck, chest, and hands can also be affected very easily. Here are a few ways to prevent signs of aging in those areas before it’s too late:

READ: Do Redheads Look Younger? Study Says They’re More Likely To Age Slower

1. Moisturize daily

One of the easiest ways to prevent signs of aging is to keep your skin moisturized. Hydrated skin stays soft and plump, while dry skin cracks and gets dull. Use a heavy moisturizer at night and a lighter one during the day and make sure to use it every single day. Reapply your moisturizer to your hands after washing.

2. Use anti-aging skin products

Serums and other products with anti-aging properties are a great way to prevent signs of aging before you even see them. Don’t wait until you start to see wrinkles or creases to incorporate these products into your routine. One place that people forget to use anti-aging products is their hands, so lather up!

READ: 10 Essential Fall Skincare Products For Redheads

3. Turn down the water temperature

Excess hot water can dry out the skin and cause redness, irritation, and broken blood vessels. Turn the water down when showering and always moisturize afterward.

4. Wear SPF all year long

Keeping yourself protected from the sun is extremely important when it comes to preventing signs of aging. Skin damage can happen all year round whenever you are exposed to UV rays, so apply sunscreen daily under your makeup and on your neck and chest. Use a hand moisturizer with SPF after washing, or wear gloves while driving during the day.

READ: Redheads: Do We Really Need SPF Year-Round?

5. Use additional sun protection

SPF products are great, but sometimes they wash off, wear off, or just don’t give you enough protection. Add an extra layer of sun protection by covering your skin up when exposed to UV rays.

6. Stay hydrated

Skin hydration starts from the inside, so make sure you are drinking plenty of water each day. Your intake should increase when you are exercising or producing sweat.

So, You Want to Get Bangs? Here’s What Redheads Need to Know

Looking to Make a Change in Your Hair?

If you’re looking to change up your red hair, why not try bangs? Bangs look great on all different face shapes and there are lots of styles to choose from. Here’s some bang inspiration for your next haircut:

Curtain bangs

If you’re not totally sold on bangs, try out curtain bangs. They are longer, face-framing pieces that can easily be tucked behind the ear, curled into the rest of your hair, or left out.

READ: 8 Fall Hairstyle Trends All Redheads Can Rock

Wispy bangs

Similar to curtain bangs, wispy bangs aren’t too much of a commitment. They are usually less full and more soft allowing you to either wear them forward or push them back away from the face a bit.

Full bangs

If you’re ready to rock bangs, a full bang might be for you. These bangs typically end right at the eyebrow and are full enough to cover most of if not all of the forehead. They can be worn straight down or parted slightly.

Micro bangs

If you already know you love bangs, but want something a little edgier, try a micro bang. This length is cut above the eyebrow giving you teeny tiny bangs while still showing some of your forehead.

Side bangs

Ultra popular in the 2000s, side bangs are a great way to have bangs without all the commitment. Some longer bangs can even be pushed into side bangs with the right part.

Curly bangs

It might feel daunting to add bangs to curly hair, but it can help frame the face and give you some added dimension to your hair. Opt for a more shaggy, wispy bang look and you’ll be golden!
