Ask a Redhead: How To Choose The Right Lipstick

Everything You Need to Know!

Every week, we put out a call for your redhead questions. This gives you a chance to get advice or input from our team of redheads. From beauty and fashion to lifestyle, redheads are in a unique boat, and we want to help make this community a place where you can turn to for all your redhead needs.

This week’s question comes from Instagram and reads, “What lipsticks should I use?” We also got some questions on redheads wearing red lipstick. Today, we’re talking all things lipstick. How to choose the right shade, what colors suit redheads best, plus some application tips to make your lipstick look amazing, and more.

1. How to choose the right shade

When it comes to choosing a lipstick shade, it can be overwhelming. There are so many options and you might wonder which color is best for you. Well, here’s a little secret: redheads can wear any color of lipstick they like. That’s right. There are no rules and you can rock whatever colors speak to you. That being said, we think every redhead should have three staple colors in their makeup collection: nude, pink, and red. With these three colors, you can match any makeup look or outfit and you’re set for any occasion. That’s why we created Finally Bold® in these three core colors. Not only did we pick formulas we know redheads will love, but we also customized the colors to be the perfect shade for redheads. The nude won’t wash you out, the pink isn’t too pink, and the red won’t compete with your hair.

2. The million dollar question: how can redheads wear a red lip?

Speaking of red lipstick, there are a lot of misconceptions that redheads shouldn’t wear red lipstick. We love a red lip and think redheads can rock it flawlessly. The biggest factor in loving your red lip is finding the perfect shade of red. Red lipstick comes in hundreds of shades, some are blue-toned, and some are orange-toned. Some red lipsticks are dark, while others border on pink or coral. We really love a true red for redheads, just like our new Finally Bold® in the shade ‘Perfectly Red’.

3. Know how to apply the lipstick

If you’re new to wearing lipstick, or just can’t seem to get the application right, we’re here to let you in on a few tricks we’ve learned over the years.

  • Lip liner is your friend. It helps you keep nice clean edges, prevents color bleed, and makes your look more polished.
  • Always blot your lipstick. Especially when wearing red lipstick, it’s important to remove excess to avoid transferring the lipstick to your teeth. Use a clean tissue or the finger trick to remove any excess.
  • Prep your lips before applying. Just like makeup, our lips need to be prepped and primed for flawless application. Exfoliating your lips and applying a light layer of chapstick 10-20 minutes before applying your lipstick is a great way to prime them.
  • Less is more when it comes to lipstick. Over-application can be messy and look unnatural. Try applying your lipstick gently starting in the center of the bottom lip. Work your way out using gentle pressure and sweeping motions. Avoid pressing too hard. If you like a more blotted look apply a little in the center and then using your lips or your finger, blur it outward.

How Ginger Men Can Enhance Their Red

Love Your Red Hair!

Your red hair isn’t as vibrant as it used to be, or maybe your red was never that vibrant but you always wished it was. Enhancing your hair color isn’t just for women, it’s a trick men can use too. Enhancing your red hair can make it look fuller, healthier, and more vibrant. Being a redhead means you stand out, so why not embrace the uniqueness and have your red hair looking its absolute best? Here’s how redhead men can enhance their natural red hair:

1. Finally Glossy® Shine & Luminosity Shampoo for Redheads

While Finally Glossy® is NOT a color-depositing shampoo, it is a great way to enhance the look of your hair a bit. This is perfect for those redheads who are happy with their color but could use some added shine and help their hair feel healthier and happier. You’d be surprised how much a little added shine, plus there are no extra steps. Just swap out your normal shampoo with Finally Glossy® and you’re good to go.

Finally Glossy Shampoo: $27

2. Use color depositing shampoos + conditioners

If you do want some added color, you can use a color-depositing shampoo or conditioner. This is a temporary color enhancement that can be done at home to help your red hair be more vibrant. You can even use a color-depositing shampoo or conditioner on your beard if it’s fading.

Applying color depositing shampoo or conditioner to a beard can be done by following these steps:

1. Choose the right product: Look for a color depositing shampoo or conditioner specifically formulated for red hair or a shade close to your natural hair color.

2. Patch test: Before applying the product to your entire beard, do a patch test on a small area of your skin to ensure you don’t have any adverse reactions.

3. Wash your beard: Start by washing your beard with regular shampoo to remove any dirt or oils. Pat it dry with a towel, leaving it slightly damp.

4. Apply the color depositing product: Squeeze a small amount of the color depositing shampoo or conditioner onto your fingertips. Gently massage it into your beard, making sure to evenly distribute the product from root to tip.

5. Leave it on: Follow the instructions on the product packaging for how long to leave the color depositing shampoo or conditioner on your beard. This typically ranges from a few minutes to several minutes.

6. Rinse thoroughly: Once the recommended time has passed, thoroughly rinse the product out of your beard with lukewarm water until the water runs clear.

7. Condition (optional): If you used a color depositing shampoo, you may want to follow up with a regular conditioner to keep your beard soft and moisturized.

8. Repeat as needed: Depending on the level of color fading and your desired result, you may need to repeat the process regularly to maintain the color of your beard.

Remember to always read and follow the instructions provided with the product for best results and to avoid any potential damage to your beard or skin.

3. Use hair glazes + conditioners

Like a color-depositing shampoo, glazes and glosses are temporary hair treatments you can do at home. They can help to boost shine and reduce frizz while enhancing your color and giving you a boost of vibrancy.

3. In-salon hair treatments

Of course, there’s always the option to head to the salon. A professional stylist can give you a temporary treatment similar to the ones listed above, or you can tackle your hair with permanent dye to enhance the color.

4. Know about some DIY hair enhancing products for redhead men

*Always consult with a professional before adding a hair product to the beard or any other parts of the body.

Dos and Don’ts Before You Dye Your Hair Red

Ready to to Go Red? Read Up!

If you’re thinking of going red, we get it. Redheads have all the fun, and red hair is a hot trend right now. But everyone needs to know going red is a big deal! Some people go red after a big life change (like a breakup), while others dream of going red long before they finally do. No matter your reason for wanting to be a redhead, welcome. We’re excited to have you. Before you fully commit, here are some dos and don’ts you will want to know.

DO: Consider the upkeep

Faux red hair is one of the hardest colors to upkeep. It fades easily and requires frequent touch-ups. Before going red, make sure you’re ready for what it takes to keep it looking nice. Well-maintained red hair can look amazing.

Red hair can be challenging to maintain for a few reasons. Firstly, red dye molecules are larger than other colors, so they tend to fade more quickly. Additionally, red hair often requires frequent touch-ups to maintain its vibrancy. Finally, exposure to sunlight and certain hair care products can cause red hair to fade faster compared to other colors.

To maintain red hair, try these tips:

1. Use color-safe shampoo and conditioner formulated for red hair to minimize fading.

2. Wash your hair with cool water to prevent color loss.

3. Limit exposure to sunlight and chlorine, as they can cause fading.

4. Avoid frequent heat styling, as high temperatures can fade red hair.

5. Use hair masks and treatments specifically for colored hair to keep it hydrated and vibrant.

6. Schedule regular touch-ups with a professional colorist to maintain the intensity of your red hue.

7. Consider using color-depositing shampoos and conditioners to refresh your color between salon visits.

DON’T: Think you can’t pull it off

Rocking red hair is all about confidence! Fair skin and freckles are common among redheads, but remember not all redheads have these same features. There’s a shade of red for everyone and if you think red hair looks great with your coloring, bravo! You have found your color.

DO: Go to a professional

It’s tempting to dye your hair at home, and you can. But, we really recommend going to a professional. They will make sure the dye doesn’t damage your hair, the color red is right for you, and steps for the necessary upkeep is explained to you.

Finding a hair stylist you trust to dye your hair red involves a few steps:

1. Ask for Recommendations: Seek recommendations from friends, family, or acquaintances who have vibrant red hair and inquire about their stylist.

2. Research Online: Look for reviews and testimonials of local salons and stylists who specialize in coloring, particularly red hair.

3. Schedule Consultations: Book consultations with a few stylists to discuss your desired red shade, maintenance needs, and ask about their experience with red hair coloring.

4. Assess Their Portfolio: Request to see before-and-after photos of red hair transformations they’ve done. This will give you an idea of their skill and style.

5. Communicate Clearly: During the consultation, communicate openly about your expectations, concerns, and ask any questions you have about the process and maintenance.

6. Trust Your Instincts: Pay attention to how comfortable you feel with the stylist and whether they listen to your preferences and offer helpful advice. Choose someone you feel confident in.

7. Start with a Trial: If you’re unsure, start with a less drastic change or a temporary red color to test the stylist’s skills and your comfort level before committing to a full color transformation.

By following these steps, you can find a hair stylist who understands your vision for red hair and has the expertise to achieve it while maintaining its vibrancy and health.

DON’T: Forget it is a commitment

Aside from needing frequent touch-ups, going red is a commitment. Red hair might fade easily but it also sticks around. If you have blonde hair you’re going to be coppery and warm for quite some time. When choosing to go red, make sure you’re okay with the process it would take to undo it, or that you’re ready to stay red for a while.

DO: Consider your eyebrows

When choosing red hair, you should consider your brows. If you have dark brows, consider tinting them red. If you have light brows, you could get a tint, or use a redhead brow gel! Mismatched brows might stand out against your new red hair.

DON’T: Worry what the haters say

If you’re going for a “natural” ginger shade of red, you’re probably going to start getting some ginger comments. People love to tease redheads, so be prepared for some snarky comments every once in a while.

DO: Embrace the red life

Being a redhead is fun. No matter if you’re born with it, or choose to go red, embrace the redhead life. We love having redheads by choice in our community and welcome you with open arms.

3 Way To Create an Edgier Flair To Your Redhead Makeup Routine

90s Grunge Makeup is Back!

If there’s one thing about redheads, many of us (thanks to TikTok) have the minimal, fresh-faced “no makeup” look down. Our freckles peek through and with the help of Finally Have Lashes redhead mascara and a few swipes of Finally Have Brows tinted brow gel, it’s perfection. But minimal, low-key makeup isn’t for everyone, and that includes some redheads. 90s styles and “edgy” grunge-style makeup have been trending. If you’re wondering how to achieve this look, we’ve got you!

1. Eyeliner

The key to these “edgy” or “grunge” makeup looks is eyeliner. Now we normally love brown liner for redheads, but to achieve this look you have to use black. Black liner gives that dark, grunge look you’re going for. You can use a liquid liner and create a wing, or try a pencil liner and smudge it out. But it’s important to use liner on both the top and bottom of your eye to really get the look you’re going for.  Many redheads have the added benefit of fair skin, which will make the black liner pop even more.

For a grunge edgy makeup look, consider these eyeliner techniques:

1. Smudged Liner: Apply a creamy black eyeliner along your upper lash line, then smudge it out with a small brush or a cotton swab for a worn-in look.

2. Graphic Liner: Create bold, angular lines or geometric shapes using a black liquid eyeliner for a striking contrast against the rest of your makeup.

3. Winged Liner: Apply a classic winged eyeliner using a black gel or liquid liner, but extend the wing slightly further and make it more angular for a edgier vibe.

4. Double Liner: Line both your upper and lower lash lines with a black eyeliner, then add a second line above or below the first using a different color or texture, like a metallic liner or a dark eyeshadow, for dimension.

5. Smoked Out Liner: Line your eyes with a black pencil liner, then smudge it out with a smudging brush or eyeshadow for a smoked-out effect that adds depth and intensity to your eyes.

2. Mascara

Another product we adore in shades of auburn and brown is mascara, but again for this look, it’s gotta be black! Try the Finally Have Lashes® Hourglass Mascara in “Perfectly Black” to make your lashes pop. Apply your mascara heavily to the outer corners to accentuate the eye and create that cat-like affect. Bottom lash mascara is optional.

3. Lips

An edgy eye look can either be paired with a more neutral lip if you want the eyes to be the star of the show or if you want to go full-on bold — go dark. We love a dark lip on redheads and think more redheads should embrace dark lip colors. Try a dark pinky brown, a dark red or even a black if you want to fully commit.

To apply a dark red grunge edgy lip, start by exfoliating your lips to ensure a smooth canvas. Then, line your lips with a dark red lip liner, slightly overlining if desired for added drama. Fill in your lips with a dark red lipstick using a lip brush or straight from the bullet for precision. Blot with a tissue and reapply for intensity. For a grunge effect, gently smudge the edges with your fingertip or a cotton swab. Optional: add a touch of black lipstick or eyeshadow to the center and blend outward for depth.

What is Lip Plumper Actually Doing and Why Should Redheads Be Careful?

Plumped Lips or an Allergic Reaction?

If you’re someone who has thin lips or just wants fuller lips, you have a few options. You can use makeup to overline and give the appearance of fuller lips, or you can do something to actually make your lips fuller. For some, this means getting lip injections from a plastic surgeon. However, this isn’t an option or even a desire for everyone. A common alternative to cosmetic lip injections is lip plumping products. People use lip plumper products primarily to enhance the appearance of their lips by making them look fuller and more voluminous. Lip plumpers typically contain ingredients like menthol, cinnamon, or peptides that cause temporary swelling or irritation, resulting in a plumper appearance.

Well, redheads might need to be careful when using lip plumper products. Here’s why:

The truth is that lip-plumping products achieve the swell by temporarily irritating the lip and causing a reaction. Most lip plumpers stimulate the blood flow to the area. This irritation typically results in a tingling or slightly burning sensation, which some people find uncomfortable but others may enjoy for the temporary plumping effect it provides. It’s similar to the way that spicy foods can cause your lips to change color and become swollen and tender.

While the majority of lip-plumping glosses and topical products are relatively safe, they could be something redheads should be cautious of. Redheads are more likely to have sensitive skin, and because lip-plumping products are intended to cause a reaction, they may be getting more than they bargained for. Lip plumpers can cause redness and swelling around the mouth if not applied neatly, and redheads with extra sensitive skin could even cause over-swelling, rashes, or other kinds of breakouts.

There are alternatives to lip plumpers:

Apart from lip plumpers, there are several other products and methods that can help plump your lips:

1. Lip Scrubs: Exfoliating your lips with a gentle lip scrub can help remove dead skin cells, leaving your lips smoother and slightly plumper.

2. Lip Masks: Similar to face masks, lip masks are designed to hydrate and plump the lips. Look for masks containing ingredients like hyaluronic acid or collagen.

3. Lip Serums: Lip serums often contain ingredients like peptides and antioxidants that can help improve lip texture and fullness over time.

4. Lip Oils: These products provide hydration and nourishment to the lips, making them appear fuller and more supple.

5. Cinnamon or Peppermint Oil: These essential oils can temporarily plump the lips by increasing blood flow to the area. However, they can also cause irritation in some individuals, so use them with caution.

6. DIY Lip Plumping Masks: You can create your own lip plumping masks using natural ingredients like honey, cinnamon, and coconut oil. These can help hydrate and plump the lips temporarily.

7. Lip Plumping Gloss: Some lip glosses contain ingredients like menthol or capsaicin that create a tingling sensation and temporarily plump the lips.

Remember to be cautious when trying new products or methods, especially if you have sensitive skin or are prone to allergic reactions. It’s always a good idea to do a patch test first and consult with a dermatologist if you have any concerns.

Don’t forget to spot test

This doesn’t mean redheads can’t enjoy plumping products, but be sure you spot-test and apply carefully. Redheads may not know they have sensitivity to something until it’s applied to the skin.

To patch test a lip plumper:

1. Choose a small, inconspicuous area on your skin, such as the inside of your wrist or elbow.

2. Cleanse the area with a gentle cleanser and pat it dry.

3. Apply a small amount of the lip plumper to the test area.

4. Leave the product on for at least 24 hours without washing it off.

5. Monitor the test area for any signs of irritation, such as redness, itching, or swelling.

6. If you experience any adverse reactions, wash the area with water and discontinue use of the product.

7. If no irritation occurs after 24 hours, the lip plumper is likely safe for use on your lips.

Remember to always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and consult with a dermatologist if you have any concerns about potential allergic reactions or skin sensitivities.

Why Do Women Dye Their Hair Red After Breakups?

We have always wondered this.

You’ve just been through a bad breakup, or maybe you got ghosted by someone you were into. A coping mechanism as old as hair dye itself is to alter your look as a crucial part of the healing process. He always loved you as a blonde? Well, you’re going red. Looks like it’s time to turn over a new leaf.

You might be tempted to get those “trauma bangs”, but we’ve been on the internet long enough to know that women go way more drastic than a bang cut. People often make changes to their appearance during a breakup as a way to reclaim their identity or signify a fresh start. Red hair may symbolize passion, transformation, or simply a desire for something new and bold. It can be a form of self-expression and empowerment during a challenging time. Changing hair color, especially to something as vibrant as red, can also be a way to boost confidence and feel more in control during a period of emotional upheaval. It’s like saying, “I’m taking charge of my life and embracing change.” Additionally, red is often associated with vitality and energy, so dyeing one’s hair red could be a way to inject some excitement and positivity into a challenging situation.

Dyeing hair red after a breakup is a step women can take to feel like a new woman after being let down. This is portrayed perfectly by comedy influencer, @yoleendadong on Instagram.

Comments on the video prove that this is a common female experience, and say things like:

  • “As you can see, he didn’t text back”
  • “Staring in red hair and self cut bangs 👁👄👁”
  • “Welp my pic should tell how my story went…🫠”
  • “😂 I feel attacked 😂”
  • “We’re all living the same life 😂😂😂😂”
  • “I actually dyed my hair red and BLOCKED HIM🤤😂”
  • “🥲 now everyone knows why my hair’s red”
  • “Watching this with red hair rn..”

If you’re a non-redhead going through something and ready to join the redhead community, welcome. We’re so happy to have you. Being a redhead is awesome and we think you’ll like it.

And natural redheads going through something, put down the scissors and the dye!

How Redheads Can Rock: Auburn + Red/Brown Mascara

We want redheads to understand that you can rock anything!

For redheads getting into makeup, it can be tempting to stay within the “neutral” color ranges and follow some of the outdated makeup guidelines found online. If you followed our How Redheads Can Wear series, we’re now pushing out a new How Redheads Can Rock series focusing on makeup trends, unique tips, and busting myths that redheads can/can’t wear this or that. For our next installment in this series, let’s talk auburn and red/brown mascaras. Redheads often have unique undertones in their hair that can be complemented beautifully by auburn or red-brown mascara. These shades can enhance the natural warmth of their hair color, making their eyes pop without overpowering their overall look. Plus, it adds a subtle yet stunning touch of coordination to their makeup palette.

For years, black and dark brown mascara were the only options redheads had, and with ultra-light lashes, forgoing mascara for a “natural” look wasn’t an option. That’s one of the main reasons we developed the Finally Have Lashes® Redhead Mascara line. We wanted redheads to have a more natural option for no-makeup days and light makeup looks.

SHOP FINALLY HAVE LASHES

1. Choose the right shade for you

Auburn mascara is a reddish-orange shade of brow that still defines the lashes without feeling heavy or unnatural — like a lot of black and dark brown mascaras do. It’s perfect for strawberry blondes and redheads who like a more natural look. Our Finally Have Lashes® Perfectly Auburn comes in both our OG Hourglass formula and our new Enhancing formula.

Finally Have Lashes Mascara: Perfectly Auburn

Red-brown mascaras like our Finally Have Lashes® Perfectly Chestnut and Finally Have Lashes® Perfectly Brown are great for redheads who want something a little darker and more defined, and those with darker red hair. Unlike most of the traditional brown mascaras on the market, these brown tones are red-based which means they are flattering on red hair and look much more natural than black-brown tones.

Finally Have Lashes Mascara: Perfectly Chestnut

2. Know some simple application tips

One of our favorite ways to rock auburn and red/brown mascara is to apply a darker shade, like Perfectly Chestnut or Perfectly Brown to your top lashes, and Perfectly Auburn to your lower lashes. This helps your top lashes look full and dark while keeping your lower lashes light, but still defined.

If you’re a redhead with tinted lashes or even just naturally darker lashes, Perfectly Auburn will still work for you! It will appear darker on your lashes, but when the light catches you’ve got that perfect red hue. This makes for a very natural-looking dark lash

We love auburn and red-brown mascaras with just skincare for a truly “no makeup” look, with light makeup and even with glam. They truly are the most versatile options for redheads. They also provide a subtle enhancement to a no-makeup look for redheads by adding definition to the lashes without appearing too harsh or dramatic. It complements the natural warmth of their hair, creating a cohesive and effortless appearance. It’s a great way to subtly accentuate the eyes while still maintaining a fresh and minimalistic vibe.

How To Make Your Redhead Routines More Earth-Friendly

Little steps forward to make a carbon impact…

Each year, we celebrate Earth Day on April 22nd. We take this time to share ideas on how you can be more sustainable, reduce your carbon footprint, and feel better about how we treat our planet. We know we can’t change the world alone, but every choice makes an impact. There are lots of small changes we can make in our daily lives to do better, and this Earth Day we’re focusing on some changes you can make in your redhead beauty and home life routines that are more sustainable.

1. Home cleaning changes

In your home, making small swaps is easy! One swap we love for both sustainability and for redheads with sensitive skin is using wool dryer balls. Not only are they reusable, they are better for sensitive skin because they don’t have fragrance or other chemicals in them. If you like a little fragrance you can add a couple drops of essential oils to your dryer balls. Other places you can make more sustainable choices are in your kitchen with reusable paper towels and reusable dishcloths/cleaning towels instead of disposable paper towels. Eco-friendly cleaning spray in a reusable bottle is also a great way to reduce plastic waste, as is using reusable food storage bags and skipping single-use plastic baggies.

2. Makeup changes

When it comes to beauty products, look for products made from sustainable materials and those with minimal packaging. Also, opt for reusable makeup remover pads instead of disposable makeup wipes or single-use cotton rounds. Single-use face cloths have become quite popular, but we love having a set of fabric face cloths that we use just for our faces and can wash each week. In the shower you can reduce plastic waste by choosing a shampoo bar over bottles of shampoo. More sustainable choices can also be made when purchasing an already reusable item. Look for items made from recycled or plant-based materials like these claw clips, or this nickel-free razor that we love.

3. Conserve water

Turn off taps while brushing teeth, fix leaks, and consider installing water-saving fixtures.

4. Compost food waste

Create nutrient-rich compost for your garden while reducing methane emissions from landfills.

5. Conserve energy

Turn off lights and unplug electronics when not in use, and switch to LED bulbs.

6. Support sustainable brands

Choose companies that prioritize environmental responsibility in their production processes.

7. Reduce meat consumption

Eating less meat can help lower greenhouse gas emissions associated with livestock farming.

8. Plant trees

Trees absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, making them essential for combating climate change.

Being more sustainable can feel overwhelming, but it’s as easy as making better choices for the earth with every purchase you make. Celebrate Earth Day every day, redheads. Rock it like a Redhead!

6 Ways Redheads Can Cover Rosacea

Don't Let Redness Define You

Rosacea is a complex skin condition with various triggers, but it’s commonly associated with fair skin due to its increased sensitivity to environmental factors like sunlight and temperature changes. Fair skin contains less melanin, which provides less protection against UV rays and can lead to increased inflammation and redness, characteristic of rosacea. Additionally, fair skin tends to have more visible blood vessels, which can exacerbate the appearance of redness associated with rosacea. Hormonal factors and genetic predisposition also play a role in its development, which might contribute to its higher prevalence in women.

Rosacea causes redness in the face, specifically on the cheeks, chin, forehead, and nose. Rosacea cannot be cured but can be calmed and covered with makeup to reduce the appearance. Wondering how you can cover your rosacea? Here’s a few tips:

1. Keep Skin Calm and Clean

To reduce rosacea redness, you want to start with a clean, calm face. This will help to keep the redness at bay under your makeup. Wash with a gentle cleanser and apply calming skincare. Use sensitive skin-friendly products and look for things that are “non-comedogenic” to avoid excess pore clogging.

2. Moisturize + Protect

You want to top your skincare off with a gentle moisturizer and most importantly, SPF. All redhead skin needs to be protected from the sun, but those with rosacea need to wear SPF to avoid a sunburn which could further irritate rosacea, and to reduce any excess redness.

3. Prime Your Face

Once your face is moisturized and you’ve applied your SPF, you will want to prime it. Use a gentle primer to help your makeup adhere to your skin. You can start color correcting in this phase with a green-tinted primer. Or, you can even use a nude-tinted primer to add an extra layer of coverage.

4. Color Correct

Color correcting the redness in your skin is the best way to cancel it out and help it hide under your makeup. Green is the opposite of red, so using green-tinted color correction products is a great way to go.

To color correct rosacea, use a green-tinted primer or concealer. The green hue counteracts the redness of rosacea, creating a more neutral base for foundation application. Start by applying a small amount of green-tinted product to the areas affected by rosacea, blending it gently with your fingertips or a makeup sponge. Allow the product to set for a moment before applying foundation. Ensure the foundation matches your skin tone to create a seamless finish. Remember to use light layers and build coverage gradually to avoid cakiness.

5. Pick The Right Foundation

To cover rosacea you will want to use a medium to full coverage foundation, or something that’s buildable. More full-coverage foundations can sometimes feel heavy on the skin, which is why a buildable option may work better for getting more coverage just in the affected areas.

When selecting a foundation to cover rosacea, opt for ones labeled as “non-comedogenic” to avoid pore clogging. Look for products with a green or yellow undertone to counteract redness. Choose formulas specifically designed for sensitive skin and free from harsh chemicals or fragrances. Consider trying samples or testers to ensure the shade matches your skin tone and the formula doesn’t exacerbate irritation. Additionally, consider using a color-correcting primer before applying foundation to neutralize redness further.

6. Set Your Makeup

Setting your makeup with a powder will help it to stay all day, and can even add an extra bit of coverage to the areas where your redness is most prominent.

Ask a Redhead: How Can I Be Confident + Love My Red Hair?

We believe being a redhead is all about loving your red hair, being confident and helping the younger redhead community to embrace their red hair journey, too.

Every week, we put out a call for your redhead questions. This gives you a chance to get advice or input from our team of redheads. From beauty and fashion to lifestyle, redheads are in a unique boat, and we want to help make this community a place where you can turn to for all your redhead needs.

A common topic we get questions about is how to gain more redhead confidence. We believe being a redhead is all about loving your red hair, being confident and helping the younger redhead community to embrace their red hair journey, too. Confidence is one of our favorite topics at How to be a Redhead — and a reason we have dedicated an entire section of our website to this — so let’s dive in!

If you ask any redhead on the street about their redhead experience, you’ll notice there’s one thing in common: it’s a journey. For some redheads, it’s an easy road and a no-brainer. For some, it’s harder. And for many redheads, it’s still a work in progress. We, unfortunately, live in a world where things that fall into the “other” category are often seen as negative. This may cause some young (and older) redheads to feel a need to try and fit in more. This often leads to redheads dyeing their hair, and even tanning their fair skin to try and be more like “everyone else” around them. If you’re trying to be something you aren’t, you often end up resenting the things that you are, which can lead to a lot of self-hatred for redheads.

What can we do about it? Being a redhead is unique and special and a beautiful thing, so how do we learn to embrace the things that make us different and build our redhead confidence? We’ve got some tips:

1. Find your place in the redhead community

Because red hair is so rare, and redheads can be born to non-redhead parents, it’s not uncommon for redheads to be the only ones in their family or friend group. This can feel isolating and lonely, so it’s important to find your place within the redhead community. Make redhead friends (even if it’s just online) who can relate to your experiences, and find a community that will build you up and show you how truly special being a redhead is. And, follow accounts like ours: @HowtobeaRedhead. Find inspiration in the variety of empowering content:

Part 20 | Are you the only redhead in your fam too? Our 20th guest is @Alena Schiappacasse in Brooklyn, NYC 📣This is our last street episode in 2023. We’ll be back in 2024 with more! The purpose of this series was to see if redheads actually have an unspoken bond. When you cross another redhead on the street (or at the grocery store, etc), you might wonder what their experience was like growing up or if they love their hair. We hope this series gave you an insight into the lives of other redheads, and made you feel more connected, too ❤️👩🏻‍🦰

2. Embrace the unique

Instead of seeing your red hair as different or bad, start telling yourself how unique it is, how special it is, and how lucky you are to have this amazing hair that so few people have. You might have to fake it at first, but the more you tell yourself that, the more you’ll begin to believe it.

3. Learn how to complement your red hair

It’s hard to love your hair and your features if you don’t feel proud of them. Learning the colors and styles that complement your hair and skin can do wonders for your confidence. Check out our Redhead Can Wear Series.

4. Take pride in your red hair

The more pride you have in your red hair, the more confidence you will feel. Take pride in caring for your hair and treating it with the love it deserves. This will help your hair to look and feel better and give you more to be proud of.

5. Understand it’s a journey

As we’ve said, redhead confidence is a journey and you may have bad days or feel off, but like any form of self-love you just have to keep trying. Try a little each day and eventually, you’ll realize your mindset is changing.

Did you know November 5th is National Love Your Red Hair Day? It is a special holiday created by the co-founders of How to be a Redhead. Here at H2BAR, we love our red hair and we wanted a day for redheads everywhere to be acknowledged, appreciated, and celebrated.
