When it comes to skincare, no one has devoted more time and effort to making beautiful, healthy skin attainable for everyone than celebrity dermatologist, Howard Murad, M.D., FAAD. He is the founder of the incredible skincare line, Murad Skincare Inc. He is one of the world’s leading skin and health care authorities and perfectly understands a redhead’s sensitive skin.
“Because of the sensitive nature of redheads’ skin, it’s important to patch-test before applying any new product that may be too harsh,” said Dr. Murad. “I suggest doing this behind the ear, as the skin is just as delicate as your complexion but it’s less noticeable if you do end up getting a reaction.”
We spoke one-on-one with Dr. Murad about the top skin tips for redheads, product recommendations & more:
H2BAR: What products do you recommend for redheads with very sensitive skin?
Dr. HW: I recommend products that contain hydrators, anti-inflammatories and antioxidants to reinforce the strength of the skin’s barrier function. Murad’s Redness Therapy line contains Goji Berry Extract as a hydrator for dry, flaky skin that also reduces inflammation, Pomegranate Extract acts as a powerful antioxidant that helps to protect skin from free radical damage and Azelaic Acid and Peppermint Leaf Extract work together to help reduce stinging and discomfort in order to soothe and calm red skin.

H2BAR: How many days does it take for one’s skin to adapt to a new product?
Dr. HW: The skin turns over about once every 30 days with all new cells. Depending on the skin type, the length of time for skin to adapt to new topical products varies but typically, it’s about a month.
H2BAR: Do you recommend any particular foods to prevent a sunburn?
Dr. HW: Redheads have very sensitive skin. As redheads already know, sunscreen is incredibly important. To boost the efficacy of topical sunscreen, arm yourself with nutrients that can protect from the inside out. Pomegranates are a great source of ellagic acid, one of nature’s most powerful antioxidants. Pomegranate Extract is both an anti-inflammatory and one of the most effective antioxidants when it comes to sun protection.
H2BAR: When treating a redhead, do you use any pre-cautious, tips, advice?
Dr. HW: To optimize skin hydration, look for sunscreens that contain Hyaluronic Acid and glycolipids to attract moisture to the skin barrier. Licorice Extract is also an important anti- inflammatory agent to look for in sunscreens. And, never forget to moisturize. This is the ultimate line of defense in the care of youthful skin. Maintaining proper moisture levels will ensure firm, radiant and youthful skin for years to come.
H2BAR: We know living a healthy lifestyle promotes great looking skin. What special tips do you have for redheads?
Dr. HW: My philosophy of Inclusive Health is made up of three facets that encourage my patients to take a 360 degree approach to skincare and overall wellness. Looking Better, which is achieved through the topical use of high-performance and efficacious products; Living Better with a diet high in water-rich foods to fuel your body to optimal levels of health; and Feeling Better through Emotional Self-Care, proper stress management and an emphasis on what makes you the happiest. Even a brief stroll around the block in the middle of the day can re-center your mind and put you at ease. Like I always say, the fastest way to reduce stress is to smile!
Smile bright, redheads. Rock it like a Redhead!
