Did you know red beards are pretty standard for non-redheads? This is because while a redheaded person needs both parents to have the redhead gene, you can produce a red beard if just one of your parents has the gene. This means that many brunettes and even blondes may have some red in their beards. If you take pride in your red beard, you want that vibrant red to shine. Here are some tips and tricks for keeping your red beard looking and feeling great.
1. Enhance your beard
It is not what the product calls for, but many red-beared men have written into H2BAR saying they enjoy using Finally Glossy® Shampoo for redheads on their beards. They claim it adds shine and luminosity to the beard hairs (like it claims to do for the head of hair) and although we can’t 100% back this because it is not formulated for beards, we love to see the product being enjoyed by all with red hair.
2. Comb + detangle often
Beard hairs are coarser and thicker than the hairs on your head, which means they can be prone to tangles and knots. Using a beard comb or just a wide-tooth comb to detangle your beard can help to keep it soft, shiny, and healthy.
- Wash & Condition: Clean your beard and rinse it thoroughly.
- Towel Dry: Gently pat your beard dry with a towel.
- Apply Beard Oil: Use a beard oil or balm to soften and nourish your beard.
- Use a Wide-Tooth Comb: Start combing from the tips to the roots to detangle gently.
- Regular Maintenance: Comb regularly and trim as needed to keep your beard tidy.
This routine helps keep your beard smooth and manageable.
3. Get regular trims
Even if you’re trying to gain some length in your beard, the best thing you can do is trim it regularly. Keeping a beard trimmed will help it to look fuller and healthier. Beards tend to get a little stringy towards the ends, making you look unkempt and your beard thinner.
The frequency of beard trims can vary based on personal preference and beard growth rate, but a good rule of thumb is to trim every 4-6 weeks. Here’s a breakdown:
- Shorter Beards: If you maintain a shorter beard style or stubble, you might need to trim more often, around every 2-4 weeks, to keep the shape sharp and even.
- Medium-Length Beards: Trimming every 4-6 weeks is usually sufficient for medium-length beards. This helps manage split ends and keeps the beard looking well-groomed.
- Long Beards: If growing a longer beard, you might trim less frequently every 6-8 weeks. Focus on trimming split ends and maintaining the overall shape.
- Personal Preference: Your ideal trim schedule might also depend on how fast your beard grows and your preferred style. Some people like a more rugged look and trim less often, while others prefer a neater appearance and trim more frequently.
4. Exfoliate your skin
The skin under your beard needs some TLC, so exfoliate regularly. This will help to prevent ingrown hairs and encourage new growth in your beard. Exfoliating is essential for a healthy beard!
Redhead men can exfoliate their beard and skin by using a gentle facial scrub or exfoliating beard wash once or twice a week. Apply the product to damp skin and beard in circular motions, focusing on the beard line to lift dead skin and prevent flakiness. Rinse with lukewarm water and follow with a soothing beard conditioner or moisturizer. Regular exfoliation helps keep the beard healthy and the skin smooth.
5. Apply beard oil
Using beard oil will help hydrate your beard and give it a softer appearance. This will help your red stand out, too! Beard oils can be applied with your hands or a brush once or twice daily. Beard oil may also help your beard grow if it’s not your desired length.
6. Use a color-depositing shampoo/conditioner
For fading beards, color-depositing shampoos and conditioners can be a great option. Most beard dyes won’t give you a natural red color. Still, a color-depositing product is natural looking, won’t damage your beard, and will fade after a certain number of washes if you decide it’s too vibrant for your liking.
Rock it like a Redhead!
