4 Things You Need to Know Before Dyeing Your Hair Red

Not everyone is blessed with natural red hair. There are some women who feel as if they should have been born with red hair and thanks to great products, they can make it happen. But, red hair is not the easiest color to perfect, you need to constantly maintain it and knowing about the right products will make life so much easier. We talked with Christine Carbone, owner of A Prima Salon in Gig Harbor, Washington, about what women should know before going red.

“I’ve always believed fall is the perfect season to have red hair. There are so many options and combinations within that color scheme including: Red Red, Copper Red, Red Violet, Auburn, Strawberry Blonde and more,” says Christine. “There are many ways to achieve beautiful red hair, you just need to do it the right way.”

Here are 4 tips every person needs to know before taking the ‘red plunge’ :

1. Find a Stylist:

“Once you find a stylist, ask around and find one with a good reputation, the first question your stylist should ask you is how much red you want, and if you want it all over or just subtle low lights. Or, perhaps you want a beautiful and trendy ombre look with red coloring at the ends of your hair. There are so many things that can go wrong at home while trying to switch over or updated to red coloring including: hot roots , uneven color, orange spots, and dull pinkish tone. All of these can be harmful to your hair and costly and time consumingto fix.”

2. Search for Your Desired Color:

“The next step your stylist should do is assist you in identifying a picture of the exact look and tone of the desired red color. The internet is a great resource if you don’t have magazines available, and Pinterest is my favorite place to score looks.”

3. Red Hair Fades Quick:

“Something to keep in mind when changing over to a redhead is it fades quick. I would highly recommend a styling regime geared toward color treated hair and possibly a colored shampoo or conditioner to keep your hair vibrant and beautiful. Be sure to keep your locks out of the sun to avoid sun fading your color.”

4. Know the Trends & Rock The Color:

“Once you achieve perfect color, the hottest hair trend this fall is bringing back classic beauty. The trick to a classic look is lots of volume, which can be achieved with a large barrel curling iron and pinning each section to cool, large velcro rollers set on dry hair prepped with a medium hairspray. Adding a halo type hair extensions helps instantly add length, thickness and volume. Recently Diane Von Furstenberg featured this exact look on her runway show from New York Fashion Week. Her models looked stunning and classically beautiful with hair that featured lots volume on top and gorgeous body throughout the rest of the hair.”

Christine does recommend Paul Mitchell ‘The Color’ for covering highlights or Paul Mitchell PM Shines Demi Permanent Hair Color which is a semi permanent hair color. But it’s important to check with your hairstylist to see what’s best for your particular hair and skin tone.
