Let’s talk about how redheads can rock highlighter and feel confident wearing it:

Just like with our How To Wear series, we’re working on a new How Redheads Can Rock makeup series. We talk trends, unique makeup, and makeup stereotypes that redheads face. This time, we’re talking about highlighter!

Have you noticed the gorgeous glow celebs and influencers have? It’s usually because a highlighter is used. If highlighter is done right, it will enhance the face and give a stunning glow — especially in the cheekbone area. Highlighter is one of those products that can feel intimidating, and can look a little off if you aren’t used to applying it right. Let’s talk about how redheads can rock highlighter and feel confident wearing it:

Find the right shade

When it comes to highlighter, there are a ton of color options. From golden-bronzed colors to almost white, and even a few colors like pink and purple. Choosing a highlight color may come down to personal preference, but there are a few tips to help you decide. If you’re a fair-skinned redhead, stay away from the super bronzy options. Those might appear dark on your skin and look muddy. You also want to avoid anything too pink if you have facial redness you’re trying to cover up.

Usually, a good safe option is a champagne color.

Choose the right formula: liquid or powder

The formula is another personal preference. There are liquid/cream options and also powder options. Liquid/cream highlights are usually a little more subtle, but can be easier to blend and apply. Powder highlight will give you more glow, but needs to be applied more strategically to avoid looking dry or having any patchiness. You can also do a combo for maximum highlight.

How to apply highlighter

When it comes to applying highlighter, you should be focusing on the highest points of your face. This includes cheekbones, brow bone, the tip of the nose, and your cupid’s bow. You can also apply highlighter to the inner corners of the eye to make them pop!

As far as the actual application, it depends on which type of highlight you have. Liquid and cream highlighters can be applied by gently dabbing with the fingers, a beauty blender, or a makeup brush. Powder highlighter should be applied with a fan brush to get even coverage and blend the edges.

  • Blend your highlighter out a little. Leaving a harsh edge might look fine in the mirror, but once it catches the light it will be very obvious. Blur the edges gently while keeping the highest point with fuller coverage
  • Balance your foundation and highlight. If you’re wearing a super dewy foundation, go lighter on the highlight. Wearing too much dewy, radiant finish makeup may make your skin look greasy/oily.
  • Set your highlight, with highlight! If you’re wearing a liquid highlighter, set it with a powder one at the end of your routine. This will make it pop more and make sure you glow all day.
  • Apply in good lighting. While getting the hang of the highlighter application, make sure you apply it in good lighting. Direct natural lighting or good indoor lighting is key. Otherwise, you might be in for a surprise when you step outside.
