Early afternoon on October 30, 2018, Apple released the redhead emojis to all iPhones via the Apple iOS 12.1 update! Twitter erupted with feelings of pure excitement, shock and some were not too happy. The redhead emojis are in their own category, so redheads are not able to express themselves with other emojis; only the redhead emoji itself.
Emojipedia’s Chief Emoji Officer, Jeremy Burge, took to Twitter to reply to those inquiring why redheads are limited to one emoji. His responses were:
There aren’t any plans for additional skin tones (which is how the options work for other emojis) – it was one option considered but in the end this is the approach that was taken. It’s possible the alternative could have been no redheads!
