We all love a good sparkle — especially in the summer months when the sun is shining and weather is sweet. Recently, there’s been a trend going around social media to get “glitter hair”. The trend involves adding craft glitter to clear shampoo, washing your hair, and then rinsing out the shampoo to leave some of the glitter behind.
Why it’s dangerous
We don’t know if this works, but we do know it might not be a good idea. First, craft glitter isn’t meant for the body or hair. It could cause scalp irritation and even some damage to your hair. If you use heat on hair that has small bits of plastic in it, it could melt and bond to the hair, damaging it permanently. Additionally, craft glitter could clog up your drain causing some serious home issues. Here is a “tutorial” from a TikToker showing how they apply glitter to the hair in the shower:

Safe ways to add sparkle to your red hair:
If you want your red hair to sparkle, there are a few healthy, safe ways you can go about it. Skip the craft glitter and try one of these instead.
1. Hair Tinsel
Hair tinsel is a quick and easy way to add some sparkle to your hair. You can install hair tinsel in your own hair, or head to the salon and have in installed. Just make sure you find one that’s heat safe — especially if you like to straighten or blow dry your hair.

2. Hair Glitter Spray
Use a biodegradable hair glitter spray like the Eva NYC Kween Silver Body and Hair Glitter Spray. The key here is to use something that’s made for the hair and is biodegradable. If you do use a glitter spray, make sure you wash it out really well to avoid irritation or build up, especially on the scalp.
3. Hair Gems
These super cute temporary hair gems are a great way to add a little sparkle without any of the damage. You simply stamp them onto the hair and let the sticky back hold them in place. Pluck them off when you’re done and wash your hair like normal.

4. Hair Jewelry
If you want to add some shine without the glitter, try some silver or gold hair jewlery. You can attach it to your hair with small slips, weave it through braids or add it to your hair-tie or hair clip.
