Frizz Fighter: 6 Ways To Tame Thick, Frizzy Hair This Summer

Updated: November 2nd, 2023

By: Tessa Viole & Kara Dunford

“Many redheads face the skirmish of the season: taming thick, frizzy red hair. In the opposing corner, heat and humidity eagerly slink in after the long winter hibernation and before you know it you wake up with a less attractive version of Grace Coddington’s hair, with the consistency of a Brillo pad,” says Kara DunfordHow to be a Redhead writer.

“We all love the beautiful days that summer can bring us, but we don’t love the humid air frizzing up our lovely locks. Luckily, there are a few things we can do to help tone down our frizz so that we don’t step out of the house looking like Weird Al,” says Tessa VioleHow to be a Redhead writer.

As seasoned heavyweight frizz fighters, both girls have a few “redhead friendly” products and tricks to add to your cache of moves against the dreaded frizz-head:

1. Use Heat Protectant

Blow drying and straightening your hair can create frizz even when we don’t want it to. The spring and summer months make it easier for our hair to dry naturally so you shouldn’t have to even worry about using either. But, as we all know, straighteners and blow dryers can be a girl’s best friend when styling.

Tip: Try not to over do it and make sure you use heat protection products on your hair with every use.

2. Wear Your Red Hair Up

Wearing your hair up can make your frizz a lot less noticeable and can be more comfortable when the air is hot and sticky.

3. Don’t Wash It Every Day

Not washing your hair every day might seem a tad gross, but many of the natural oils found in your hair can beat frizz. When we wash our hair every day we tend to strip our hair of the oils it needs to fight off frizziness.

When drying your hair opt to use a microfiber towel! Introducing the How to be a Redhead Soft Microfiber Hair Towel for Redheads. Because wet hair is at its most vulnerable, this custom microfiber towel gently and carefully absorbs moisture from your red hair and dries it quickly, all while protecting it from stretching and breakage. This design is uniquely shaped to wrap all of your hair securely (no matter the length), with an elastic strap to comfortably keep things in place. Your hair journey starts here, redheads.

4. Try These ‘Redhead Friendly’ Products

Aveda Dry Remedy Daily Moisturizing Oil: Powered by naturally hydrating buriti oil this product moisturizes hair without the suffocating effects of silicone. Works great to keep frizzy tresses smooth and sleek after using heat styling tools, such as a flatiron.

To tame those frizzy flyaways:

Apply 1-2 drops of oil to fingertips.

Part dry hair down the center of scalp, dividing into two sections; smooth oil from mid length of hair to ends through one section, repeat on opposite side.

Comb fingers through hair to evenly distribute.

Run brush lightly over hair; with residual oil on fingertips; flatten any flyaways on the crown of your head by smoothing from part downward.

After Party Hair Crème by Bedhead: For silky, shiny hair with a lightweight formula try After Party to take control of rogue flyaways. Designed for all hair textures, conditioning and moisturizing ingredients paired with a number of frizz fighting ingredients, like Mica enhance shine.

To maintain your mane, dispense a dime-size amount of After Party into your palms and smooth onto dry hair. The fruit medley fragrance is an added bonus to keep hair smelling pleasant in between washes.

Garnier Fructis Anti-Humidity Smoothing Milk: It provides 24 hour frizz resistance. Sealing out humidity, the smoothing milk controls unruly locks, without weighing hair down.

Begin the frizz fighting treatment with slightly damp hair, dispense the product into your hands and work from the ends to the roots while blow-drying your slightly damp hair.
