Wearing sunscreen and protecting your skin is the best way to avoid skin cancer, damage, and accelerated signs of aging. We know what you’re thinking when you clicked on this article: no, there is not edible sunscreen product. However, there are foods you can eat to help protect your redhead skin from the sun.
What do foods actually protect redhead skin from the sun?
Foods high in antioxidants can help, in combination with your topical SPF, to protect your skin. This is because different compounds in food can help to fight damage to the skin. A CNN Health article discusses the subject with Dr. Rajani Katta, an expert, and author in the field as well as Dr. Patricia Ferris, a dermatologist, and fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology.
Ferris explains that properties in oranges, red fruits, vegetables, green tea, red grapes, and berries all offer the body natural sun protection from the inside out.
For younger-looking skin and increased sun protection, Katta recommends eating plenty of foods rich in antioxidants, omega-3s, and vitamin C. This includes foods like tomatoes, sweet potatoes, spinach, berries, grapes, pomegranates, oranges, grapefruits, kiwis, broccoli, fatty fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts. You may also be able to sip your way to more sun-safe skin by drinking coffee and green tea.
Reminder: always use SPF
Eating a healthy diet is always encouraged, but the added pro of some internal sun protection might encourage you to add a few more fruits and veggies to your diet. Just remember diet alone is not enough to protect the skin and SPF should still be used daily regardless of the weather conditions.
