Bee Gorgeous: Adding Honey to Your Redhead Skin Routine

Redhead season is finally here and its time to revamp our skincare routine to fit the cooler temperatures. One of the most important areas in our skincare routine is moisturizing, especially during the cold winter months as we redheads tend to have more sensitive skin.

Believe it or not, an insufficient amount of moisture in our skin can actually contribute to acne, as the skin produces more sebum in order to moisturize it.

One of my favorite natural ingredients for skin care is honey. It is best to choose unpasteurized honey as it contains the most nutrients. Honey works as a humectant drawing moisture to the skin. If using the sticky substance straight on your face is a turnoff, there are many other natural products that use honey as the main ingredient.

Here are some honey benefits in your redhead skincare routine:

1. Moisturizes

The honey helps to infuse moisture into the thirsty skin and creates a healthy natural glow.

2. Natural antibacterial

This means it is going to help fight bad bacteria, and help stop acne and blemishes in their tracks. If you already have acne and it has left scars, regular use of honey over time can be used to help lighten and soften that area of skin.

3. Anti-aging

As redheads, we know we are always going to look gorgeous with our red locks, but it never hurts to keep free radicals that cause aging at bay. Honey helps to prevent/soften wrinkles and age spots.

There are many ways honey can be applied to the skin, specifically the face (cleanser, mask, spot treatment) for fantastic healing benefits. The following is a face mask I use and love. The addition of pumpkin and apricot oil in this mask increases its moisturizing abilities and the pumpkin adds a host of nutrients to bring life to the skin.

Honey and Pumpkin Face Mask

1 Tbsp Honey (unpasteurized/raw)
1 Tbsp Pumpkin Puree (organic if possible)
1 Tsp Apricot Seed Oil (optional: other oils can be used as well, such as EVOO for dry skin and sesame/grapeseed oil for oily skin)

*I find canned pumpkin is the easiest to use but fresh cooked pumpkin works just as well.

Mix the following ingredients in a small bowl and apply to the face. Avoid the eye area. Leave on for 20 minutes and rinse off. Your face will feel soft, refreshed and moisturized.

Here are 3 of our favorite ‘redhead friendly’ products formulated with honey:

1. Burt’s Bees Honey & Grapeseed Oil Hand Creme: No one likes dry hands, especially when it’s cold outside. This natural hand cream provides daily therapy for extremely dry hands using some of nature’s most moisturizing agents like honey, jojoba oil and rosemary extract.

2. Matrix Biolage R.A.W. Nourish Shampoo and Conditioner: Formulated with quinoa husk, honey, and other key ingredients to turn dry, dull red hair into soft, shiny, touchable strands.

3. Hey Honey Don’t Miss A Spot! Fresh Honey Cleansing FoamThis is a great cleanser enriched with honey extract and vitamin B5. Your redhead skin will love this.
