Ask a Redhead: Do Redheads Go Gray? Or Just White?

This isn't a big surprise!

Every week, we put out a call for your redhead questions. This gives you a chance to get advice or input from our team of redheads. From beauty and fashion to lifestyle, redheads are in a unique boat, and we want to help make this community a place where you can turn for all your redhead needs.

This week, we are answering an Instagram question that reads: “I was told by my mother, and one or two others, that red hair goes white, not gray. Is this true?” The subject of red hair changing as we age comes up a lot, so let’s discuss it!

What does it mean to go gray?

As we age, our hair loses pigment, which can cause the strands to appear gray. Did you know that studies have shown that gray hair is an optical illusion? What happens is that some of the strands turn white and reflect the coloring of the hair around them, thus causing the hairs to look gray. If you look at the individual strands, they are actually white or faded versions of your natural hair color.

Do redheads go gray or white?

All redheads are different and unique, so there’s no one definitive answer here, but redheads are less likely to have gray hair and usually turn white. Many redheads look strawberry blonde or even blonde before going white, skipping that gray stage.

But, some redheads may retain their darker pigment and appear gray; it all depends on your genes and your shade of red hair. Yes, redheads go gray, like people with other hair colors. Graying hair is primarily determined by genetics and aging, regardless of the natural hair color. When people age, the pigment cells in their hair follicles gradually die off, reducing melanin production. This results in hair turning gray or white as it grows.

Red hair is typically caused by a variant of the MC1R gene, which also influences how melanin is produced in the hair. Despite this genetic difference, redheads experience graying hair similar to individuals with other hair colors. The timing and progression of gray hair can vary widely among individuals, influenced by genetics, lifestyle factors, and overall health.

How to combat fading red hair?

You may notice your red hair isn’t as vibrant as it was when you were young. This is natural and part of aging. For some redheads, your hair may darken or turn more “brown,” and for others, it may lighten and look more “blonde.” This loss of pigment can be combatted by using color-enhancing products, dyeing your hair, or using products like Finally Glossy® to enhance the shine and luminosity of your natural red hair. Whether you choose to combat or embrace the change, you will always be a redhead!

Maintaining vibrant red hair can be challenging because it tends to fade faster than other hair colors. Here are some tips to combat fading and keep your red hair looking vibrant:

1. Use Color-Protecting Shampoo and Conditioner: Choose a shampoo and conditioner specifically formulated for colored hair, especially ones that mention they are for red or vibrant shades. These products help lock in color and prevent fading.

2. Wash Hair Less Frequently: Washing your hair too often can strip away the natural oils and color. Try to wash your hair less frequently, ideally every 2-3 days. Use dry shampoo between washes if needed.

3. Wash with Cool Water: Hot water can open the hair cuticles and cause color to fade faster. Rinse your hair with cool water to help seal the cuticle and retain the color.

4. Avoid Harsh Hair Products: Avoid products that contain sulfates and alcohol, as these can strip away color and moisture from your hair. Look for sulfate-free and gentle formulas.

5. Use UV Protection: Sun exposure can cause color fading. Protect your hair from UV rays by wearing a hat or using hair products with UV filters when you’re in the sun for prolonged periods.

6. Deep Condition Regularly: Use a deep conditioning treatment once a week to keep your hair moisturized and healthy. This helps repair damage and maintain color vibrancy.

7. Avoid Heat Styling: Heat-styling tools like flat irons and curling irons can cause color to fade faster. Minimize their use or use a heat protectant spray before styling.

8. Touch Up Your Color: Schedule regular touch-ups with your hairstylist to refresh your red color and keep it looking vibrant. This is especially important if you have roots or your natural hair color is significantly different.

9. Consider Color-Enhancing Products: Color-depositing shampoos and conditioners are designed specifically for red hair. These can help refresh your color between salon visits.

10. Protect Hair During Swimming: Chlorine in pools and salt water can strip away color. Wear a swim cap or rinse your hair thoroughly with clean water before swimming to minimize the absorption of these chemicals.

Following these tips and adopting a hair care routine tailored to protect and enhance red hair can help combat fading and keep your red locks looking vibrant and beautiful.
