‘Redhead Friendly’ Sunscreen for Every Occasion

By: Adriele Dixon

As a redhead for my entire life, I have a very close relationship with sunscreen. As the typical fair skinned and freckled ‘ginger’, my skin goes from light to lobster in no time. I have even experienced the dreaded hairline-part burn — you know what I’m talking about ladies. I grew up with the basic white greasy SPF 30 sunscreen, and THANKFULLY there are so many choices now for those of us that are sun conscious.

It’s sad that I remember sunscreen breakthroughs over the years, but I do, and I’d love to share my favorites. All of the ‘redhead friendly’ sunscreens work on my incredibly fair and sensitive skin, which makes me so happy.

Here are my favorites for the summer season, no matter the occasion:

1. The Body Staple. Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Sunscreen in SPF 10:  I LOVE this stuff. It sprays on lightly, but covers well and is easy to apply. This is perfect for days out in the sun. It doesn’t make me feel greasy and allows full body coverage.

2. Beach Bum. Neutrogena Beach Defense SPF 70: This is formulated to be waterproof and will hold up to the surf and the sun. This comes in a spray as well as a lotion. Apply often and liberally!

3. Daily Protection lotion. SkinCeuticals Sheer Physical UV Defense SPF 50. Every day. No matter what. I love this formula! It is light, blends right into my skin before I apply makeup. Sunscreen should always be your base, even if your makeup contains SPF. If you rely on just makeup, you might forget to apply sunscreen the days you go makeup free. Get in the habit. Your skin will thank you.

4. Sunscreen Alternative. Smashbox Photo Set Finishing Powder SPF 15+. This powder is a great addition to your makeup routine. Smashbox is known for their fabulous primers and finishing powders, and I love that this product sets your makeup AND adds protection! Double whammy! This also works great as a touch up throughout the day. As always with sunscreen, start the day with a layer of protection and reapply often.

There are obvious things to do to supplement sunscreen such as wear hats, clothing that covers to limit exposed skin, and lastly be cognizant of how much time you spend in the sun. Do you have a favorite sunscreen?

Rock it like a Redhead!
