Winter can be pretty hard on the skin, especially for sensitive-skinned redheads. Colder weather, increased use of heat in our homes, and a lack of moisture in the air can all be a recipe for dryness and irritation. Want to keep your sensitive skin hydrated and healthy during the cold months? Check out these tips to get you through the season.

1. Upgrade your moisturizer

Most of us opt for a lightweight moisturizer for the warmer months, but if you’re considering swapping out your face cream for something a little heavier in the winter. If you don’t want to buy a new product, consider using your heavier night cream during the day or adding a facial oil into your routine for added hydration

2. Add a humidifier

Adding humidity to your home can help your skin, especially at night. We crank up our heaters during the winter, which can leave our homes’ interior void of moisture. A home humidifier will help your skin stay nice and plump.

3. Exfoliate gently

It’s common to want to scrub off that dry, flakey skin, but you must be careful. Opt for a chemical facial exfoliant over a physical to avoid irritating the skin, and make sure you’re hydrating correctly after exfoliation. For your body, keep your skin exfoliated in the shower with a body brush, silicone scrubber, or exfoliating gloves. Be sure to moisturize from head to toe as soon as you leave the shower

4. Let your skin soak is up overnight

Help your skin with a little boost overnight. Applying heavier moisturizing products overnight can give them time to soak in and soften the skin. You can do this on your face, lips, hands, feet, and body!

5. Focus on problem areas

If certain body parts get extra dry in the winter, give those some TLC. Common problem areas include the scalp, elbows, hands, and feet. For your scalp, check out ways to reduce seasonal dandruff.

6. Work on your skin barrier

If your skin barrier is damaged or compromised, it may become dry. You can help repair it by wearing sunscreen, keeping hydrated, and using products with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerine, and ceramides for added moisture retention.

7. Cover up outdoors

If you’re doing all your skincare and using a humidifier at home but still experiencing seasonal dryness, it’s most likely from being outdoors. Cover up when heading outside to keep your skin safe from the elements. Wear a hat to protect your scalp, and opt for a large scarf to cover your face and neck. Gloves are a good idea for keeping your hands from drying out.
