As we age, our skin evolves and it’s important to change up bits of your skincare and makeup routines. Understanding your skin and adjusting accordingly will ensure your makeup is working for you — and not against you. Whether you’re 50+ or in your 40s looking ahead, here are some makeup tips that will help you to look and feel your best:
Create a good base
No matter your age, great makeup starts with a good base. The older we get, the more elasticity and fullness our skin loses. That means it’s extra important to start with hydrated skin. Focus on a dedicated hydrating skincare routine. Begin with a gentle cleanser to cleanse the skin without stripping its natural moisture. Follow up with a hydrating serum enriched with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, promoting deep hydration and a plump, youthful appearance. Choose a moisturizer tailored to your skin type, ensuring it replenishes moisture and maintains a healthy balance. For an extra boost, incorporate an eye cream designed to hydrate the delicate eye area and minimize fine lines. Consistency is crucial in maintaining optimal hydration levels, leaving your skin supple, smooth, and naturally glowing.
Then, start your makeup off with a lightweight primer to help your makeup stay in place. More about this below.
Even your skin
When it comes time for foundation and concealer, your main goal should be to even out your skin tone. As we age, many of us will experience discoloration of the skin or even sun and age spots. To even your skin tone as a redhead over 50 using foundation and concealer, start with a hydrating primer.
Choose a foundation that matches your skin tone and has anti-aging properties. Apply concealer to areas with discoloration or blemishes. Blend well for a natural look, and consider using a setting powder to set the makeup. Focus on applying concealer and foundation lightly to even out the skin, instead of fully covering the skin up. Using too much concealer or foundation can lead to it settling in fine lines and wrinkles which only enhances them more.
Additionally, opt for a lightweight, buildable foundation to avoid a heavy finish. Focus on areas with redness or uneven pigmentation, and use a color corrector if needed. Choose a concealer that provides good coverage without settling into fine lines. Blend with a makeup sponge or brush for a seamless application. Finally, consider a luminous or dewy finish for a youthful glow.
Warm things up
Mature skin can sometimes appear dull or lacking in the “warm rosy glow” department. Bring some color back to your face by using blush and bronzer. Blush is great for creating a natural flush, while bronzer can help to define and enhance the face without feeling too harsh. Consider peach or coral shades for blush, and choose a bronzer with a subtle warmth to enhance your natural glow. It’s always a good idea to test shades to find what suits your skin tone best.
Use a lighter hand
There’s nothing wrong with liking a full face of glam, but remember that your skin might not be able to wear heavy makeup the same way it did years ago. And that’s okay. Instead, try using a lighter hand and creating more of a natural look.
Focus on your lips and eyes
During the aging process, we often lose volume in our lips. You can play up your lips and redefine their shape with a lipliner the same color as your natural lip color. Avoid heavily overlining, and instead just try to balance the lips out and make them look symmetrical. As for your eyes, add depth and dimension by lining lightly with a brown pencil and applying your favorite mascara. For a super natural redhead look try Finally Have Lashes®!
