Why We Love October: Thanks To ‘Anne Of Green Gables’

"I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers"

“I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers”- Anne from Anne of Green Gables

Anne Shirley is the main character from the novel Anne of Green Gables, written by Lucy Maud Montgomery. Anne is an imaginative, spirited, and independent young girl who is mistakenly sent to live with two elderly siblings, Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, at Green Gables, a farm in Avonlea. The story follows Anne’s adventures and coming-of-age experiences as she grows up on Prince Edward Island, Canada. The character of Anne Shirley is known for her fiery red hair, vibrant personality, and her ability to find beauty and wonder in the world around her.

There have been numerous movies and television adaptations of Anne of Green Gables. Some of the most well-known adaptations include:

1. Anne of Green Gables (1985) – A TV miniseries starring Megan Follows as Anne Shirley. This adaptation and its sequels, “Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel” (1987) and “Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story” (2000), are highly regarded and popular.

2. Anne with an E (2017) – A Netflix series that reimagines Anne’s story and delves deeper into the darker aspects of her past. This series gained a dedicated fanbase.

The character of Anne Shirley has been portrayed by various actresses in these adaptations, but Megan Follows’ portrayal in the 1985 miniseries is often considered one of the most iconic.

If you’re a fan of the book, movies or tv shows, you know Anne describes October at the Green Gables farm: “October was a beautiful month at Green Gables, when the birches in the hollow turned as golden as sunshine and the maples behind the orchard were royal crimson and the wild cherry trees along the lane put on the loveliest shades of dark red and bronzy green, while the fields sunned themselves in aftermaths.”

Whenever we read or watch Anne of Green Gables, it makes us think: redheads have a special place in their hearts for October, just like Anne.

September can shock us with blistering hot days nestled between the crisper, cooler ones. November brings colder days, darker skies, and even sometimes snow. The last few leaves drop from the trees and winter is all but here. But, October is the pinnacle of fall. It is also when we realize it’s sort of nice to ditch the heavy SPF application and switch to a lighter option for daily use (*insert laughter here*). October days are usually sunny but crisp, the leaves are vibrant and still clinging to the trees and the fall festivities are in full swing.

October is a time when we can don our sweaters and scarves and nestle into the cozy feeling of the season. The humidity has usually died down, and our red hair no longer frizzes the moment we step outside. It’s a time to appreciate the changing season and the crisp air. It’s a redhead’s time to shine and come alive because our red hair perfectly matches the leaves, and jewel-toned autumn shades complement our red locks. It’s a season that can’t be beat.

Thanks to Anne, we really appreciate this time we call Redhead Season. Just like her, we have a deep appreciation for the beauty of nature and the changing seasons. And, a special fondness for autumn and its vibrant colors. The love for the autumn season is depicted in the books and various adaptations, and we’re here to say we appreciate her gratitude and want to continue the love. We hope all of you do too.

Rock it like a Redhead!
