The Mirror reported recently that 500 British redheads were polled to find out who they believe are the most iconic redhead celebs. The names that topped the list were no shock.
- Ed Sheeran
- Prince Harry
- Nicole Kidman
- Mick Hucknall
- Chris Evans
- Nicola Roberts
- Chuck Norris
- Geri Halliwell
- Sharon Osbourne
- Katharine Hepburn
The poll also asked these redheads a bit about how they feel about their red hair and how it connects to bullying. Many UK redheads experience bullying throughout their childhood and adult lives. The sigmas and stereotypes around red hair in the UK are much more prevalent than we experience here in the US. Interestingly enough, about three-quarters (78%) of redheads in the UK believe redhead celebrities, regardless of if their hair is natural or if they are red ‘by choice’, help to break the negative stigma around the color.
Redheads were also asked if they have been bullied about their color and almost half (48%) said they had been. Half (48%) also admitted they have dyed their hair at some point. Most of the redhead bullying seems to happen in the grade school days, and three-quarters (75%) of the poll responses indicated that they wished they had a different hair color as a kid. But only a small percentage fewer said they would never think of changing it now. A similar percentage (71%) said they believe the struggles they had with their hair color in their younger years actually made them stronger.
One in three (34%) of the redhead felt as though they learned to love their hair color in their early 20s. We have to wonder when the rest came to embrace their red locks, and how many still harbor some resentment for their hair color. Only about a quarter (25%) of the redheads said they feel they have finally found a style that “complements their distinctive look”.
Who are your favorite redheads? Can you relate to the poll numbers above?
