BUSTED: 7 Myths Redheads Should Know About SPF And Sunscreen

Learn Your Facts, Redheads!

There are a lot of myths and misconceptions about sunscreen use and sun protection. Unfortunately, many of these myths can lead people to miss crucial steps when it comes to sun protection. Here are 7 common myths and the truth behind them.

1. MYTH: Sunscreen causes cancer

For many years, people avoided applying sunscreen because they believed the chemicals in it would actually cause cancer. This is false, and sunscreen and proper sun protection are actually the only way to actively prevent skin cancer

2. MYTH: SPF in makeup is enough

We love makeup with SPF in it, but it’s a common misconception that the SPF in your makeup is all the protection you need. Unfortunately, makeup usually only has an SPF of about 10 to 15. Additionally, when combined with the other ingredients in your makeup, the SPF in makeup can help, but it should still be combined with a broad spectrum SPF of 30 or higher.

3. MYTH: People who tan don’t need sun protection

Most people think that only those who sunburn, like redheads, need to use sun protection. The truth is everyone needs to stay protected from the sun. Sunburn is a visible sign of too much sun exposure, but just because your skin doesn’t turn red doesn’t mean it’s not being damaged.

4. MYTH: SPF doesn’t need to be reapplied

It’s very common to believe applying sunscreen once is enough. Sunscreen has to be reapplied every 2 hours, or after swimming or sweating. Not reapplying sunscreen leaves you vulnerable to UV rays.

5. MYTH: All clothes provide sun protection

Covering up is a good form of sun protection, but not all fabric provides equal protection. Thicker, heavier, and darker fabrics with tightly woven fibers provide a lot more protection than those that are lightweight, light in color, and have a looser weave. If you need something more lightweight, the best option is UPF clothing.

6. MYTH: You don’t need SPF on a cloud or cloudy day

Many people think that you only need SPF in the summer when it’s hot. The truth is, you need sunscreen year-round. Cloudy and cold sunny days are two times when you are at risk and may not even know it. It’s good to check your weather app to see the UV index and just wear sunscreen every day.

7. MYTH: Sunscreen isn’t necessary inside

In addition to thinking that SPF is only needed in the summer, it’s commonly believed that you only need sunscreen when you’re outside. While the windows in your home and car do block some of the UV rays, they don’t block them all. This means it’s best to wear sunscreen every single day no matter if you’re planning to head outside or not.
