7 Ways Redheads Can Help Reduce Their Chances of Getting Skin Cancer

Know your risk and help prevent melanoma

Redheads are at a higher risk for skin cancer even if we don’t go in the sun. The MC1R gene is more susceptible to skin cancer with or without skin exposure, so redheads need to do everything they can to prevent melanoma.

While redheads make up less than 2% of the population, we make up about 16% of the world’s melanoma patients. The best way to prevent skin cancer is to:

  1. Reduce time in the sun.

  2. Check the UV index frequently. There are several smartphone apps to monitor UV rays. These rays are what cause cancer, so knowing when they’re strong is essential.

  3. Always wear SPF when the UV index is above 0.

  4. Wear additional sun protection like sunglasses, hats, and long sleeve shirts.

  5. Visit the dermatologist regularly. This could save your life.

  6. Avoid tanning beds and other UV light.

  7. Eat foods high in antioxidants to help protect against cellular damage.

At the end of the day, you don’t have to let the risk of getting skin cancer stop you from enjoying life, but you do need to take precautions to reduce your risk and stay healthy.
