Just like heat from hot tools, excess heat from the summer sun may leave your red hair looking and feeling dry, damaged, and frizzy. The best thing to do is to protect your hair from the sun by using hats or headscarves, but if your hair does get sun damage, don’t fret! Here are a few things you can do afterward to help your hair stay healthy and get back to its smooth, shiny state.
1. Try a deep conditioning mask
Pop on a deep conditioning mask and let your hair soak up the nourishment it needs to spring back. Opt for something that will leave hair feeling hydrated and refreshed but not bogged down with heavy oils.

2. Use some hair oil
If your hair is feeling extra dry and frizzy, especially towards the ends, try using some hair oil. Concentrate towards the bottom half of the hair and use sparingly to avoid over-saturating your hair.

3. Cool down the water
If you typically take extra hot showers, consider cooling them down if your hair has had a lot of heat exposure. The hot water will dry out your hair and scalp even more than it already is. Opt for a lukewarm shower, or turn the water down when washing your hair.
4. Avoid excess heat
It may be tempting to blow dry wet hair after a day in the sun. Give your hair a good wash using a sulfate-free shampoo and then let it air dry to avoid excess heat damage. Try to avoid using other hot tools as well.
5. Swap your pillowcase
If your hair is feeling dry and frizzy, give it some relief at night with a silk or satin pillowcase. It will help keep your hair from becoming more damaged while you sleep.
