4 Easy Ways to Care for Your Curly Red Hair

...and how to eliminate frizz with DevaCurl stylist!

Updated: October 31st, 2023

Curly red hair can be difficult to manage, especially when there is frizz added to the equation. With so many products on the market and tips on the internet, it can also be overwhelming to figure out what to do with your red mane. We’re breaking it down with DevaCurl stylist, Deanna Brown, from the DevaCurl SOHO salon in New York City.

1. H2BAR: What are the steps to achieving perfectly curly red locks?

DB: It includes a detailed wash day routine, refreshes during the day and hair treatment.

Wash day should never be rushed. Be sure to set up your curls for excellence. Massage the cleanser in circles two times if needed to really get the blood flowing. Rinse down and be sure to never rub your hair when drying. This will cause the cuticle to open and that promotes frizz. Looking for the perfect hair towel? Look no further!

How to be a Redhead Soft Microfiber Hair Towel

When drying your hair opt to use a microfiber towel! Introducing the How to be a Redhead Soft Microfiber Hair Towel for Redheads. Because wet hair is at its most vulnerable, this custom microfiber towel gently and carefully absorbs moisture from your red hair and dries it quickly, all while protecting it from stretching and breakage. This design is uniquely shaped to wrap all of your hair securely (no matter the length), with an elastic strap to comfortably keep things in place. Your hair journey starts here, redheads.

On Day 3, add a refreshing spray to your locks to help revitalize the curl pattern. Two times a month, replace your daily conditioner with a mask for about 30 minutes minimum (NO HEAT). Let it get cold on your hair so the cuticle closes leaving you with shiny smooth and frizz-free red curls.

2. H2BAR: What is Co-Washing? What are its benefits?

DB: Co-washing stands for conditioner washing or ‘conditioner-only washing’. When most people refer to co-washing, they’re referencing cleansing hair with a conditioner as an alternative to shampoo.

A lot of brands tend to have sulfates in the shampoo (and even sometimes in the conditioner) that strip curly hair of the natural oils it needs. Co-washing was designed to keep hair moisturized while still cleansing the hair.

You should co-wash with a conditioner at least once or twice a week (preferably on day 4 or 5), depending on your hair texture.

3. H2BAR: What exactly is the no-poo method? What are its benefits?

DB: The DevaCurl No-Poo Method is a sulfate free cleanser formulated to hydrate the hair while washing away any dirt or buildup without removing the natural oils our curly hair absolutely needs to thrive.

Simply apply a generous amount of the cleanser to your scalp and massage with your fingertips. Allow the water to help move the No-Poo through the ends. Note: The no-poo cleanser does not lather.

4. H2BAR: How can a redhead combat frizzy curls?

DB: Redheads can combat frizz by taking small sections when conditioning and styling. Red hair is typically really dense and tends to get really frizzy and tangled. Invest in a large satin bonnet and pillowcases so that at night you won’t lose any moisture and you won’t cause friction between your strands and your pillowcase.

Rock it like a Redhead!
