If you’ve been perusing around the beauty world of Instagram or YouTube you’ve likely come across a new makeup technique called strobing.
Strobing is essentially the use of highlighter to make your face seem more illuminated and fresh. Opposite of contouring, strobing does not sculpt out the face using dark colors. Instead, it brings attention to the places where light would naturally highlight the face.
What is exceptional about this technique is that it genuinely complements pale skin. There are two tricks to achieving a great strobing look without appearing overly greasy. Here they are:
1. Apply a natural blending base on the entire face to build on.
You can try ‘redhead friendly’ foundations like Clinique Beyond Perfecting Foundation or Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Moisturizer.

2. Apply a highlighter to the high points of your face.
These areas include your cheekbones, middle of the forehead, down the nose, and on the cupid’s bow. Some ‘redhead friendly’ highlighters are Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder or Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector.
Tip: Start small and apply lightly to ensure that you don’t end up with too much product. If you have applied too much, you can always round out your look with a matte powder.
