Dry shampoo gives your red hair the appearance of looking clean, since it absorbs the oil that can make hair look dirty. Find the right washing routine that’s best for you, whether it’s three times a week or less, and use dry shampoo every day in between.
With the holiday season amongst, what happens when you are out of dry shampoo and you’re late? “Don’t panic! You can make your own,” recommends Mercedes Parrilli, International Artist for George The Salon in Chicago, IL. “Your cupboards hold everything you need. Grab cornstarch*, which is more natural compared to baby powder and baking soda, and it is oil absorbing.”
Cornstarch works well because it is a corn flour which absorb the oil from your hair. If you’re worried that the cornstarch residue will cause your hair to look faded (absolutely no redhead wants that), Mercedes recommends mixing cinnamon with cornstarch equal parts.
“It’s the best trick for those with red hair. Simply apply with a large cosmetic brush or put into a salt shaker and apply to roots. After application rub in really well to absorb oil and style accordingly,” says Mercedes.

She recommends the cornstarch-dry shampoo trick for most of her clients because it is inexpensive and you avoid hazardous chemicals. It is also fast and your red locks will feel, look and smell amazing. Her last bit of advice is, “When using dry shampoo of any sort, it’s important to cleanse your scalp regularly. Cleansing the scalp keeps hair follicles stimulated for healthy hair growth.”
