Rita Hayworth is a classic beauty & redhead, as well as an icon of the 1940’s. To get her look, we turned to New York City makeup artist, Sarah Salice. “When thinking of her three things come to mind: lashes, lips, & skin,” said Salice. “Rita’s makeup is not over-the-top or dramatic. She was a natural beauty.”
Here is how to get Rita Hayworth’s work:
Skin Prep: “I cleanse the skin with Make Up For Ever Cleansing Milk as it does not require water & it is very gentle on all skin types. Then, I put a bit of Lucas Paw Paw on the lips to soften them up. I follow by spraying a toner mist from Mario Badescu which contains aloe & rose water to help calm the skin. It is important to make sure the skin is moisturized.”
Foundation: “For me, it is Rita’s flawless skin that stands out the most. During the 40’s, full coverage foundation was used. In fact, Rita Hayworth was a spokesperson for Max Factor in 1943. Max Factor Pan Stick foundation-type makeup provided full coverage for the skin, which looked wonderful in photos, but I image if not blended properly, it could look very heavy. Depending on the type & condition of the skin, I choose to work with Make Up For Ever HD Foundation as you can build for more coverage & the skin does not look thick or heavy.”
Contour: “At this point, I would contour her face using MAC’s pro-contour powders (in a light color since she has light skin) as they are most subtle can foundation & easier to buff out. Concentrate on bringing out those cheek bones ever so slightly & possibly the bridge of the nose.”
Brows: “Rita’s eyebrows have perfect shape, which can be attained with an eyebrow pencil.”
Eyes: “For her eyes, I would start with Urban Decay’s Eye Primer to make sure the shadow stays in place. Use very neutral colors on the eyes and for a fancier look, play up red hues. Nothing too dramatic. Rita also appears to wear false lashes on top. They are very tasteful & look extremely natural. Line the upper lash line with a black shadow so it is not harsh & does not look like liquid cat eye or winged eyeliner.”
Lips: “She keeps her eye makeup fairly subdued because her full red lips are a va va voom pop of color! The Lucas Paw Paw ointment should have softened the lips by now & they should not be glossy. Rita’s lip color is sometimes a true red & other times a a bit darker. Start by lining & filling the lips in with MAC lip pencil in ‘Cherry.’ Fill in the lips with BiteBeauty’s ‘Pomegranate- Rich Red.’”
Hair: “Rita’s hair is usually big, bouncy, voluminous curls which can be created with a thick barrel wand curling wand & hair spray or pinned up with curlers & hair sprayed.”
Rock it like a Redhead!
