The facts below are proof that redheads are truly unicorns:

1. Red hair can occur in any ethnicity

It occurs more frequently (2-6%) in people of northern or western European ancestry, and less frequently in other populations. But, the red hair gene is found in every continent in the world. It takes both parents to have the gene to create a baby with red hair. Read more here.

2. Red hair is thicker than other colors

Each strand of red hair is generally thicker than other shades which compensates for the fact that redheads have less hair. Apparently they have – on average – 90,000 strands while blondes have 110,000, and brunettes have 140,000. Read more.

3. Redheads can change temperature quicker

This is because – according to research – redheads are more sensitive to hot and cold pain. Redheads are known to be super sensitive to pain in general too. Read more.

4. A study has proven redheads could be protected against Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

This is due to the MC1R gene, the gene responsible for red hair, pale skin, and freckles. Read more here.

5. Redheads don’t usually go gray, but white instead

Red hair is said to fade to white via rose gold when the time comes. Read more here.

6. Redheads are said to have their own scent

The author of The Redhead Encyclopedia, Stephen Douglas, wrote that redheads have a naturally sweet, musk-like scent. We have also read that a redhead’s scent can be described as violet and amber. Douglas also makes a claim that a redhead’s scent can change with emotions. Read more here.

7. Redheads can produce their own Vitamin D

Studies have suggested that redheads are most efficient at synthesizing D, which is crucial for bone health and is thought to protect against depression. Scottish experts have speculated that this ability gives redheads a genetic advantage in gloomy climates because they can churn out more D in low-light conditions than people with darker skin or hair. This is all thanks to the MC1R gene mutation. Read more here.

8. Redheads are more likely to be left-handed

Scientists have also proven that left-handed people live longer.
