One of my favorite parts of Redhead Season is the cooler weather, chunky sweaters, and curling up with a great book. Ever since I was a child I’ve absolutely loved books. Reading is one of my favorite pastimes, and now I own so many books that I’m pretty sure I’ll have a life long to-be-read pile. Sometimes it’s really easy to escape into a book and live vicariously through the main character. Although, many main characters aren’t described as redheads.
While I wasn’t born a natural redhead, I always had this nagging feeling that there was something different about me than most. Books and anime were such an escape for me at that time, and something I enjoyed diving into. I felt a strong connection to the main characters of stories that allowed me to have more confidence as a kid.
Through some recommendations from my friends, here is a compilation of wonderful books featuring redhead characters. They are not only strong characters but their strong-willed natures boosted my confidence.
It’s never too late to get yourself started on some late summer/early autumn reading:
1. Song of the Lioness Quartet by Tamora Pierce, $49
This set of four books contains stories about redheaded girl Young Alanna of Trebond and how she trades places with her brother in order to be able to go on magical adventures and become a knight, as such activities are only meant for boys. These are wonderful fantasy reads for anyone who may enjoy series like Game of Thrones or The Chronicles of Narnia.
2. The Complete Anne of Green Gables Collection by L.M. Montgomery, $24
Anne of Green Gables is such a classic story and is enjoyable especially if you are fond of period pieces and history. This set contains all eight books, and even though it’s considered a children’s story, it’s a great read for all ages. These stories depict an 11-year-old orphan named Anne Shirley who was sent to two middle-aged siblings on accident and recounts her experiences dealing with multiple facets of her life.
3. Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller, $9
If you enjoyed the Pirates of the Caribbean films, or just enjoy pirate stories in general you will love this book! In this young adult novel, 17-year-old pirate captain Alosa voluntarily gets captured by her enemies to allow her the opportunity to search their ship. This book packs great adventure and romance into the story and is a great book to read this summer.
4. Black Widow: The Complete Collection by Mark Waid and Chris Samnee, $19
Black Widow is one of the comic book characters that are iconic whether you’ve read comic books or not. You might recognize her red hair from the Avengers movies, and if you’re a fan of those you’ll be really into her comic book series. This version of her story created in 2016 brings a modern vibe to her character. The book collects all 12 issues of her story.
5. Harry Potter: The Complete Series Boxed Set by J.K. Rowling, $50
This iconic fantasy series needs no introduction, and there are many interesting characters that you’re sure to fall in love with. While Harry isn’t a redhead, his best friend Ron and Ron’s immediate family are all natural redheads. The characters in the series are so relatable that anyone is sure to love this series.
6. City of Bones by Cassandra Clare, $13
This is the first book in The Mortal Instruments series following the redheaded main character, Clary Fray. She witnesses a murder but then the body ends up disappearing. She then encounters a team of warriors whose job is to banish demons from the world, called the Shadowhunters. There also was a television series based on the books called Shadowhunters on Freeform a couple of years ago. This is a great book for those who are fans of the supernatural and fantasy genres.
7. Halfway to the Grave by Jeaniene Frost, $3
This is the first installment of a series called The Night Huntress. This story revolves around the redheaded main character Catherine Crawfield, a half-vampire in hopes of finding her father. She’s taken by a vampire bounty hunter named Bones and is persuaded into an alliance against her will. There are also very romantic elements to this story, so if you enjoy love and a little bit of a racy story, this is for you. These are amazing books for fans of the Sookie Stackhouse series (a.k.a. True Blood), or if you like stories by Anita Blake or are interested in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
