During the colder months, rosacea flare-ups are common and can be exacerbated by holiday-related stress and increased use of indoor heating. This combination often results in red, rough, and dry skin for extended periods. The most effective way to manage wintertime rosacea is to prioritize skin care throughout the season and proactively prevent flare-ups. Here are our top tips for keeping your skin rosacea-free this winter.

1. Increase humidity + hydration

Dryness is a significant concern for those with rosacea. Consider using a humidifier to help maintain optimal humidity levels in your home. This will replenish the moisture that the winter air has stripped away. Staying hydrated is essential; drink plenty of fluids, preferring water and cool or room-temperature beverages. Be mindful of hot drinks, which can cause facial flushing and potentially trigger a flare-up.

2. Reduce stress

During the holidays, we experience a lot of stress. It might be hard to avoid stressful situations, but you can help your body cope. Here are some stress-reducing tips to help you manage your rosacea during winter:

Lifestyle adjustments

  • Stay active indoors: Practice yoga, Pilates, or gentle stretching at home. Physical activity releases endorphins, reducing stress.
  • Mindfulness practices: Try meditation or deep breathing exercises. Apps like Headspace or Calm can guide you.
  • Journaling: Write down your thoughts to process emotions and organize your day.
  • Consistent sleep schedule: Prioritize 7–8 hours of sleep to balance your body and mind.

Comforting routines

  • Warm beverages: Sip herbal teas like chamomile to soothe the mind without overheating the skin.
  • Cozy lighting: Create a calming atmosphere with warm, dim lighting or candles (avoiding scents that might irritate).

Self-care

  • Soothing music or audiobooks: Play calming tunes or engaging stories to unwind after a long day.
  • Warm (not hot) baths: A lukewarm bath with calming essential oils (like lavender) can be relaxing.

Social connection

  • Quality time: Stay connected with loved ones. A call or video chat can uplift your mood.
  • Winter hobbies: Try stress-busting activities like knitting, puzzles, or baking.

3. Keep covered up

Protecting your face when you head outdoors can help reduce your rosacea symptoms. Wear a scarf around your face when outside, even if you’re walking to your car or a building. Opt for something soft, breathable, and non-itchy.

4. Moisturize

Keeping your skin hydrated can help to reduce the signs of rosacea. Ensure your moisturizer is sensitive, skin-friendly, free of alcohol and perfumes, and gives you lots of hydration. Swapping your daily moisturizer for a heavier one is usually beneficial in the wintertime. Look for products that contain ingredients like niacinamide, aloe, green tea, and azelaic acid to help with hydration and redness.

5. Wear sunscreen

Keeping your skin protected from the sun is essential year-round. During the winter months, we can’t skip the sunscreen. Not only does sunscreen keep your face safe from harmful UV rays, but it can also reduce flare-ups. Sun is one of the biggest triggers for rosacea, and just because it’s not as warm outside doesn’t mean it isn’t impacting your skin.
