5 Mermaid-Themed Movies to Watch this Summer

By: Jennifer Smith

What’s a redhead to do when the days get longer and the sun gets too intense? Take a break indoors, of course!

And what better way to do that than to curl up in our favorite chairs and watch some movies about those rarest of beautiful creatures. Redheads? Well, close. Mermaids! (Although some of them are redheads, too.)

Grab your popcorn and let’s get started!

Here’s a list of some of the best mermaid movies.

1. The Little Mermaid

No list would be complete without everyone’s favorite redheaded mermaid, Ariel. Like most of us from time to time, she is bored with her life and longs to be in a different world. What she doesn’t realize is just how much trouble this will eventually lead to. Will she find happiness and love in another world, or is she destined for longing and loneliness under the sea forever? You’ll have to watch and see.

You can view this movie with Google Play, YouTube, or PlayStation Video.

2. Splash

This iconic 80’s hit features Daryl Hannah with that unforgettably perfect mermaid hair (although it’s blonde) and Tom Hanks as her love interest. Comic relief is provided by sidekick John Candy, who never fails to elicit plenty of laughs.

Watch Splash on Amazon Video, iTunes, Google Play, YouTube, Vudu, Microsoft, or Fandango Now.

3. Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides

With Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, does anything else really matter? Well, if you do insist on knowing more, this film features an interesting take on mermaids as beautiful creatures who are actually vicious and deadly, much like sirens from Greek mythology. Anyone else see any parallels here to us redheads when we get mad? Just kidding! Maybe.

It is available on YouTube, iTunes, Amazon Video, Vudu, and Google Play.

4. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

In the 4th installment of the series, Harry takes part in a dangerous competition. One task places him underwater, where he is surrounded by some pretty creepy merpeople. This is really all I can say here without giving away any spoilers. Just watch it!

You can find The Goblet of Fire on YouTube, Amazon Video, Vudu, and Google Play.

5. Lady in the Water

From the master of plot twists, M. Night Shyamalan comes this tale starring a fellow redheaded beauty, Bryce Dallas Howard, as a mysterious young woman discovered in the swimming pool of an apartment complex and the strange events that begin to occur in the aftermath of her discovery. Stretch your brain and see if you can figure out what’s really going on before the final scene. Chances are you can’t.

Work on your mystery solving skills by viewing this movie on HBO Go, YouTube, iTunes, Amazon Video, Vudu, and Google Play.

So, there you have a list of great movies to keep you basking in the glory of air conditioner and unique creatures during the summer heat. Now you can enjoy your red hair and keep cool and entertained at the same time.
