May is Melanoma Awareness Month and all redheads know sunscreen is a must for redheads. It’s essential to incorporate sunscreen into your daily regimen and re-apply every two hours. We get it though – no one likes those heavy, white tinted sunscreens that make you look even paler. That’s why we’re here to introduce you to our favorite ‘Redhead Friendly’ tinted sunscreens. [This is different than tinted moisturizers. Also recommended daily underneath tinted or regular sunscreen.]
Tinted sunscreens do just want they say: add a tint of color to your sunscreen. Essentially, you’re adding a tint to your skin while protecting it from harmful UV rays. It’s a great product to start wearing as we approach summer. You can also say goodbye to heavy, caked on foundation when it’s humid and hot. Tinted sunscreen can even be used in place of foundation too! Talk about a boost in confidence.
To refresh your memory, there are two types of sunscreens: physical (mineral) and chemical. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are both physical. They work by sitting on top of the skin to protect it from damaging UV rays. Think of them as physical blockers.
Zinc oxide is more preferred since it is broad-spectrum in UVA and UVB, which titanium dioxide is not. Zinc oxide absorbs better, meaning safer and better protection.
