4 Tips for Taming Curly, Frizzy Red Hair Without Making it Greasy

It should feel silky and moisturized, not oily

Redheads naturally have thicker hair strands which can lead to coarse hair. Some studies suggest that individuals with red hair may have a higher hair density (number of hairs per square centimeter of scalp) compared to people with other hair colors. This increased hair density can create the appearance of thicker hair overall. Additionally, the texture of red hair can vary widely, ranging from fine and straight to coarse and curly. Coarser hair strands may feel thicker to the touch compared to finer strands, and this can often lead to lots of frizz.

What do you do when the products you’ve used to fight the frizz in your red hair end up leaving you feeling oily or greasy? Combatting frizz can feel overwhelming, but we’ve got some tips + products to help you tame your mane and keep things frizz-free without that greasy feeling:

1. Frizz control starts in the shower

The way you wash your hair can have a big impact on frizz. Focus your shampoo on the roots as it can have a drying effect on the lengths of your hair. Concentrate your conditioner on the lengths and ends to avoid adding excess oils to the root. You also want to keep your water temperature low and rinse with cool water after shampooing and conditioning. The cold water will help to lock in the moisture while flattening and sealing the cuticle which will help with frizz.

2. Spend time with your after-shower care routine

Once you’re done showering, it can be tempting to squeeze all the water from your hair with your towel, but invest in the Soft Microfiber Hair Towel. This custom-made woven hair towel is soft, water absorbent, assists with fast drying, and helps to reduce frizz. Because wet red hair is at its most vulnerable, this microfiber towel gently and carefully absorbs moisture from your unique hair, dries it quickly, and protects it from breakage. This custom design is uniquely shaped to wrap all of your hair securely (no matter the length), with an elastic strap to comfortably keep things in place.

Once the water is gently extracted from you hair, leave your locks wet while you apply things like leave-in conditioner, mousse, and other serums. Not only will it add moisture but it will help the products to be distributed more evenly.

3. Pick the right products

When it comes to styling products, oils are the best thing for taming frizz, but if you struggle with oily or greasy feeling hair this may feel counterintuitive. If you do want to try an oil, use it on damp hair and apply a small amount from the ears down, focusing on your ends. Applying the oil to your palms and rubbing it all over your hands like a lotion before running your hands through your hair can help to distribute it more evenly. Applying the oil while your hair is wet gives it more of a chance to soak in, rather than sitting on the surface of the hair. If oils are too heavy for your hair, try using mousse, a leave-in conditioner, or even gel. These products can be more lightweight and reduce the risk of weighing down your hair. Here are some of our favorites:

1. Crown Affair Leave in Conditioner

2. Reverie Natural Milk Anti-Frizz Leave-In Nourishing Treatment

3. Color Wow Dream Coat

4. VIRTUE Healing Oil

6. R+Co Foil Frizz & Static Control Spray

4. Style the right way

A lot of frizz can occur during the styling phase. The best two ways to reduce frizz are heat + tension. That’s why a blowout leaves your hair looking and feeling sleek and sexy! When blow-drying your hair, you want to aim the air downwards along the strands, this helps to lock frizz and flyaways in place. If you want to embrace your natural texture, try using air dry creams, or diffusing your hair to speed up the drying process. To reduce frizz between washes, sleep in a silk bonnet or use a silk pillowcase, use a boar bristle brush to tame frizz while distributing your natural oils, and avoid using heavy oil-based products on dry hair.
