Your fun-filled-redhead-summer has begun! It’s now time for our gorgeous red locks to shine bright. With the sun, comes the need for a ‘Redhead Friendly’ approved sunscreen. We know this is a must. With so many sunscreens on the market, how do you know which one is right for you?
It comes down to choosing between mineral vs chemical sunscreens. This is the difference:
Chemical sunscreens
Chemical sunscreens allow the UV light to penetrate the skin, and it’s the chemical reaction that converts the UV light into heat that is then dissipated from the skin.
What’s good about them? Chemical sunscreens are super easy to apply, tons of options, and relatively inexpensive.
What’s the bad news? The chemicals can cause allergic reactions, especially if you have sensitive skin.
Mineral sunscreens
Mineral sunscreens, on the other hand, use ingredients (zinc oxide and titanium dioxide) that act as a physical barrier and prevent UV light from penetrating the skin. Think of mineral sunscreen as a force field!
What’s good about them? Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are the only ingredients considered safe and effective by the FDA. They’re also much kinder to our sensitive skin. Another bonus? Once applied, that force field begins to work immediately!
The bad news? Mineral sunscreens are thick and can be difficult to rub in. You may have to try a few different brands until you find one that doesn’t leave a white cast on your skin.
So this summer, I will personally be turning to a mineral sunscreen. Here are my top 4 mineral ‘redhead friendly’ sunscreens:
1. Vegan and reef-friendly
Sun Bum Mineral SPF 50 Sunscreen Lotion ($15) is creamy and absorbs nicely. It also comes in a spray formula that is perfect for kids.
2. Face sunscreen
Neutrogena Sheer Zinc Oxide Dry-Touch Face Sunscreen SPF 50 ($11) is also a great option for the face. It does leave a slight white cast so make sure to blend, blend, blend.
3. Sweat and Water-Resistant
Aveeno Positively Mineral Sensitive Skin Daily Sunscreen Lotion with SPF 50 ($10) is lightweight, fast-absorbing and both sweat-resistant and water-resistant for up to 80 minutes.
4. Hypoallergenic
Coppertone Pure & Simple SPF 50 Sunscreen Lotion ($9) is gentle, dermatologically tested and a great option for those with extremely sensitive skin.
