ASK RONA: I want to dye my hair red but it never turns out right. Help!
Hello Adrienne & Stephanie! I have wanted to dye my hair red for years and I tried a few times but it never really turned out right. My hair is very blonde right now (naturally, I am a brunette) and I was hoping you could tell me what the best way to about this is. I am very fair with blue eyes, so I think red hair would look great but I don’t know what to ask for/if it will even work since my hair is so blonde and colored!!-Molly

By: Rona O’Connor: Hi Molly! The reason your red may not have turned out well in the past is because when you have light blonde hair and a bit of light brown; the light blonde will always absorb a vibrant shade of red and could cause an undesirable red glow that doesn’t suit you. Because of your natural hair color, if the chosen red is lighter, it would have to be adjusted to the root area as that part of the hair absorbs differently than the mid-shaft to the ends of the hair. My advice is to see a colorist that is experienced in coloring redheads. Search for a colorist that knows or has a reputation for coloring red hair because there is a lot of knowledge needed to create great red hair. When you see your colorist, make sure to take a picture of the red your desire and talk with him/her about your budget for maintenance because red on light blonde hair will fade more quickly. Hope this helps!
