Know Your Heart
Know Your Heart

I’ll bet you know your shoe size and how much money you’ve stashed in your 401K! Do you know the other important numbers in your life?
No matter your age, you should know your “numbers” – blood pressure, LDL, HDL, and total cholesterol, triglycerides, fasting glucose, body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference. If you and your doctor agree the numbers aren’t what you’d like there are many life style changes you can consider as well as medication.
1. I recommend you get a heart rate monitor (great Valentine’s Day gift for your love as well!). They range in price from under $50 to over $350.
Surely, your spinning instructor is letting you know whether you should aim to be in the Endurance, Strength, or Recovery Zones, especially if you are doing intervals or “race day.” Wear the monitor while you run, take a step class or rock out in Zumba or Boot Camp!
2. If you want in depth information about heart rate monitoring, check out Sally Edward’s HEART ZONE NEWSLETTER as well as her 20+ books on sports and fitness.
Another perfect gift to yourself and those you love is a pedometer. It is an inexpensive tool to help increase your heart pumping activity – aim for 10,000 steps a day. This is especially good for walkers with joint or other health issues .
3. Eat some RED foods today for their antioxident properties – raspberries, strawberries, pomegranate seeds, cranberries, apples, or rhubarb.
Take care of your heart so you’ll be around for your loved ones a very long time!
