For the Love of a Redhead
By: Kim Wacker
Growing up as a “ginger” isn’t easy. I ALWAYS felt different. I never got attention from the opposite sex and I never looked like the other girls in school.
Can you relate?
Middle school was the worst. I wanted to be a blonde or a brunette, and more than anything I wanted to have a tan. Also, my naturally curly ringlets were bigger than my 5’0 tall barely 100 lb. body! So, like most girls, I wanted what I didn’t have; that included straight hair!
As a child, my dolls (Barbie, Cabbage Patch Kids and My Doll), all had red hair. At least I could play with something or someone who resembled me. When Halloween came around each year, I undoubtedly had to dress up as a redheaded icon. I was Strawberry Shortcake, then Pippi Longstocking (yes my mom braided wire in to my hair), and finally Anne Shirley from Anne of Green Gables (the best book series ever written)!
Yes, we redheads are unique, and yes we do have fiery tempers…it’s not a myth! But I think as an adult, I have finally come to realize that How to be a Redhead‘s moto, “Red hair is more than a hair color, it’s a lifestyle,” is right!
I can now embrace the fact that I’m different. And seriously, who wants to look like everyone else anyway?
Don’t be afraid to be yourself and love who you are.
