How to be a Redhead spoke with Marion Roach Smith about her enticing redhead book, beauty secrets and her favorite fashion advice:
H2BAR: How did The Roots of Desire: The Myth, Meaning and Sexual Power of Red Hair come about?
MRS: Throughout history, redheads have been feared and revered, loathed and adored, degraded and exalted. I wanted to track down the redhead gene. The aim was to trace back all those beliefs people had on red hair; were Scots, with their high percentage of red haired people, descended from the Celts (notoriously violent warriers)? Did Greeks really believe redheads would turn into vampires following their death? And did Russian tradition declare that red hair is both a sign of a fiery temper and craziness? So, I went all around the world talking to historians to create a great place to talk about the power and history of red hair.
H2BAR: What does having red hair mean to you?
MRS: After writing The Roots of Desire: The Myth, Meaning and Sexual Power of Red Hair, it means more than ever! It is an identifier and a characterization. I am so proud to be a redhead!
H2BAR: How has having red hair impacted your success and career?
MRS: Having red hair has allowed me to write the wonderful redhead book and I feel so privileged to have been the one to write it! It needed to be written by someone who is proud of being a redhead and that’s me.
H2BAR: What is your top redhead beauty secret?
MRS: Organic Extra Virgn Olive Oil. It is 100% natural, so I use it on my skin and it never causes irritation. I also use a drop of it under my eyes and eye socket, especially during the cold and flu season when I wake up with puffy eyes.
H2BAR: What fashion advice do you have for redheads?
MRS: Wear colors that accent your features and express your personality. I love to wear black and red. Black accents my hair and the color red makes me feel even more fiery than I already am.
H2BAR: Who is your favorite redhead celebrity?
MRS: My favorite is Henry VIII and Boudica. Boudicia led an uprising against Rome and road into battle riding on a horse, naked with her long red hair.
H2BAR: How to be a Redhead is so excited for 2012! What’s in store for Marion Roach Smith in 2012?
MRS: I am working on promoting my newest book The Memoir Project: A Thoroughly Non-Standardized Text for Writing–And Life. Also, The Roots of Desire: The Myth, Meaning and Sexual Power of Red Hair is getting a lot of attention- which is great.
