One Redhead, Two Redheads.. Audrey Ference Answers Your Question

By: Audrey Ference

Q. I am dating a ginger. Two gingers together and people automatically think we are brother and sister. It really bothers me, but my boyfriend doesn’t seem to care. I feel uneasy because I think people are always judging us, even though I should embrace our uniqueness. Thoughts? I need your advice!

A. Ha ha! I think that’s kind of charming, actually. Couples who look like each other are sort of adorable.  I’m sorry it makes you feel uncomfortable, but I think I’m with your boyfriend on this one. Like, y’all know that people think all redheads look alike—I’m sure everyone here has had the experience of someone telling you that you look like a redheaded actor/actress with whom you share no similarities other than coloring. That being the case, you’re NEVER going to be able to date another ginger without people thinking you’re family. Why deny yourself an entire attractive category of man just because people are stupid?

Secondly, I’m sure that once you show affection or in any way act like a couple, people understand the situation. Nobody actually thinks you are sleeping with your brother. Lots of couples have to deal with people making assumptions about their relationships: people with a big age difference get mistaken for parent and child, same-sex couples get mistaken for siblings or friends, interracial couples get odd looks, rude questions, people assuming they are not together. Sometimes part of being a human being in the world is dealing with other people and their ignorant assumptions. Don’t sweat what people are thinking about the two of you—just act like a couple and they’ll get the message.

Redheads should embrace and love their pale skin because it’s incredibly unique and beautiful; but sometimes it does feel great to have a little glow from the use of a great sunless tanner. How to be a Redhead talks about certain sunless tanners that are very popular on the market, but there are some tanners that you may not know about and
