Reds Salute Suzy Parker, the Original Redhead Supermodel
Redheads and fashion seem to go hand-in-hand, the dramatic contrast of pale skin and bright hair is a perfect canvas for a designer’s creation. Though the gingers certainly don’t hold a monopoly in the fashion industry, we see many more of them today thanks to the first queen of flame haired supermodels, Suzy Parker. Parker’s success is the reason in recent years we’ve seen models like Angie Everhart heat up Sports Illustrated and Cintia Dicker and Lily Cole light up print ads for reds everywhere.
Parker’s green eyes and bright orange/red hair proved fashion and screen gold as she not only became the face of Chanel but also scored roles alongside Hollywood legends like Cary Grant in Kiss Them for Me and Gary Cooper in Ten North Frederick.
Over the course of her career Parker posed in some of the most stunning fashion designs of the 50s and 60s; she worked with Dior, Chanel, and Revlon, posed on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, and many more. And like a true redhead, modeling wasn’t enough for her so she tried her hand at photography and did a stint as an editor at French Vogue as well. She proved more than anything that fashion welcomes uniqueness and that there is a place for the at once exotic, disarming, and All-American visual appeal that redheads offer.
Redheaded models will always be in the minority because they are a minority of the population but thanks to the original redhead supermodel, Suzy Parker, redheads are emerging as one of the many faces of fashion and beauty today.
